Need a new Folder

Post by L_Kilkenny »

Over the last month or so I've misplaced the knife I've carried daily for the last 10 years or so. I'd busted and reground the tip, replaced the springs and guts a couple times (free parts from Kershaw) and it was pretty well due for a rebuild again. It's around here someplace and it will probably turn up but I'm using this time as an excuse to get another. I carried this:

Not lookin for a Gentleman's knife or a custom. I'd like to keep close to the same size (maybe a touch smaller), must have pocket clip and really, really like Kershaws assisted opening but I kinda want to go with something a little nicer. Better steel, maybe some nice scales, etc. In reality this is nothing more than a glorified letter and box opener slash kitchen knife but I do occasionally use it for work and the outdoors. I do know this, I've missed the knife and forgot how much I used it.

I'm currently carrying a Schrade copy of the Buck 110 right now as the replacement and while it does the job, needing 2 hands to open and it's place deep down in the dark recess's of my pocket aren't what I'd call handy.

I carry a Puma lock back which has the same size blade as a Buck 110 but is lighter. I fitted it with a knob I got from Smokey Mtn Knife Works that allows one hand opening.

I'd replace it with the same thing. If you want to experience something new take a look at the Benchmade line up. I prefer the models that use the Axis lock. Excellent quality.

+1000 !!!

I have yellow(easy to find in attics and basements) 556s for EDC, 527 for dressy and a couple of others 551, 15030, 15020, 5000.

I like the 154CM steel best. The D2 is nicer but I can't tell the difference in durability to justify the price difference. I do not like the s30v steel for hard use. It is a bit too brittle for my taste and keeping the chips out of a fine edge on one is a pita.

Their Noryx GTX scales are very sturdy and light, the G10 is really nice but not needed for my knives.

My 5000 series auto presidio is faster without the spring assist and I've removed it and the safety mechanism too.

The Axis lock system gets stronger as it wears. You can't accidentally fold your knife on yourself with the Axis lock like you can with lock-back or those inside the folder types. For several years I've beaten on the spine of mine with a log to split wood for fire many many times with no ill effects. Very sturdy lock mechanism.
Kind regards,
Tycer

Very sweet looking knife.

I tried finding one of those years ago to put on my 110 knockoff and had no luck. I'll try again, thanks.
I'd replace it with the same thing.
I may very well do that but while I liked the knife it did have a couple issues that I would like to improve on.

That's a pretty good endorsement right there. I did the same thing with the Kersaw on one camping trip and it trashed the bushing making the blade sloppy as heck. And yes, all I ever hit was the blade, never the handle. Knife never was the same.

Thanks for the input, still looking around.
