Pheasants

Post by Marlin32 »

Has nothing to do with leverguns, but shot two pheasants today. Walked my rear end off, Well, more like my knees, normally would not post about shooting two pheasants, but this year has been tough, few birds, grass disappearing (so are places to hunt) and the nice weather is really tough. Need a snow. BUt my little Yasha, the St. Usuge Spaniel, was in a zone today. Tired dog. Just needed to brag or vent or something.

Good post. I walked today looking for deer antler sheds. My dogs, an eleven year old Lab and a one year old GSD are tired as well. We all had a big dinner and are relaxing...

Any bird hunt, especially with a dog is noteworthy and moreso if you bag some!

Sounds like a nice day afield. Our pheasant population has dwindled to about nothing.

Brill'. I like taking pheasant just about anyhow. Shot, rifle, M/L, bow, sling shot and airgun.

Heck, my little spaniel sometimes catches one her self!

You keep walking bro :D

One of my Uncles used to go out in his pasture after the first day of the season and his German Shorthair Pointer would usually catch a limit of birds which were wounded, but that had run to his place. This Uncle once went 3 seasons in a row eating pheasant twice a week without firing once. That sure makes the hunters in the Oklahoma Panhandle sound like bad shots, doesn't it?

Yasha will catch a bird once or twice a season, especially if heavy snow. Fine by me, eat the same.

If I could figure out the whole photobucket thing I would post pictures of her. She is a rare breed in this country (and probably France and Germany too) She hunts really close, most pointer people would have a cow about it. But I have hunted pheasants religously for 35+ years, and I can tell you one thing, a big running pointer ain't going to bag you many wild birds here in Nebraska!!! This dog is methodical, and a demon, if there is a bird in this field, she will point it! She matches my speed now too!!!! Super dead or wounded hunter.

And a giant baby house dog. She sleeps with us in bed. Wouldn't have it any other way either.

I love to pheasant hunt. I think anymore, it is my favorite kind of hunting. Unfortunately, it's a long drive for me to hunt wild Pheasants, and when I add up the cost of transportation, motels, and the tiny bag limits, I have found that for the money preserve hunting is the answer, as it's only a couple of hours to probably the best preserve hunting for Pheasants in the U.S. for me.

I went last Friday with a bunch of guys from work. We got to watch some of the best dogs in the world work for us, and we all had a great time, and the hunting was as tough as I want it to be, as we had few that would hold for the dogs, many run on us and flew up wild out of range, but we still bagged several and had a great time, and I was definately tired from all of the walking by the end of the hunt.

I think I would on most days, rather pheasant hunt then deer hunt, as I love to shoot and I love the action.

Memories of hunting cornfield Ringneck Pheasants and Cottontail Rabbits as boy growing up in Michigan remind me of what ignited my hunting passion and love of the outdoors. I eventually ended up with an early 12 gauge Browning BSS M/F choke as my field gun. Always thought I would get a Winchester Model 21 but that never happened.

The Pheasants are a Special Game Bird indeed.

Monday, I delivered a load of casino chips and playing cards up in KC, KS... one of the suits there to observe thir first shipment was a bird hunter and lamented the lack of water for the shortage of birds in that state.

Don't ask how that conversation started! One person unloading and about 15 standing around watching... Worse than a gov't operation... and yep, they had their representatives there also!

Used to pheasant hunt behind my Golden Retriever for many years. Now, not at all. Pheasants (all game birds for that matter) have taken a big hit the last few years here in Iowa due to bad winters and wet springs and they aren't worth the time at this point. I haven't seen a hen in a couple years although I still see the occasional rooster. Really sucks, used to have such a great time.
