My birthday present from my wife and kids is a Cimarron 1873 Short Rifle in 357 magnum:
Love the gun. Fit and finish is excellent.
I am thinking of putting a tang peep sight on it and would like to hear your opinions on which sight to get. Is there a better front sight I should also get to use with the peep? Also, what about a short folding ladder sight to use when I don't want to use the peep?

very very nice present! i have one very similar, and put a tang sight on it. really excellent shooter and shoots the 180 gr loads quite well. i used a uberti tang sight i believe. similar to the originals and quite stable and accurate.

I have one of these on a Henry and a Marbles on a Rossi 92. I honestly cannot tell the difference in performance, and the taurus is a LOT cheaper. In both cases I use a Lyman Globe 17 front sight with the Shaver inserts. Great combo for lever guns!
Thanks for all the compliments on the gun! I DO have a great wife and kids!!
I will be shooting the rifle with the stock sights for a while, but my 56 year old eyes are screaming for a peep sight
I have a Lyman peep sight on my '94 32 Special and it makes a world of difference.
From what I have read on the 'net', most guys prefer the Marbles sight over the Lyman. Having a windage adjustment on the Marbles would be handy, but not a necessity. I am more concerned with quality. I'm also thinking that a gold bead front sight would work nice with a tang. Does anyone use the Marbles tang sight with a Marbles front bead on their '73? If so, which front sight do you use (part # would be great).
Now that's a pretty levergun for sure. What a great gift!!
And I prefer the Marbles with a 1/32" brass bead - for a traditional aperture set-up. The quality of the Marbles tang is excellent and the windage adjustment is very nice for all kinds of reasons - starting with eliminating shimming...
I put a Marbles tang sight on my Marlin '94 and it works great, but I'm going to replace the front Marbles sight with a Heilman or similar globe w/inserts for levergun silhouette shooting. The original bead front is too fine and I want to at least try a globe front with interchangeable inserts and see how that works.
