Got a very cool yet unexpected early Christmas gift tonight from the father in law.
He decided he is done with the black powder scene, so he decided to give me a
Thompson Center Renegade in .54 cal. He says he has shot 8 to 10 deer with this rifle and
he is done killing deer with black powder. I do not know much about this rifle other than the fact it is in great shape
and looks really cool. Any one have any experience with these rifles.

Love the Renegade! They are very portable, powerful in 54 and reliable as heck. In a fit of madness I sold mine, and am looking to score another 54 in Lefty at some point. Congrats on yours.

I had a TC .54 back in the day.
It shot the maxiball well.
A round ball would work with a lighter load but was not best for the fast twist (1:48 IIRC).
I eventually traded up to a Lyman Great Plains rifle with a 66" twist that was deadly accurate with round balls.
50 grains of 2F, a .535 ball & .010 lubed patch should be a tack driver if that either 1:45 or 66 twist. 100-110 grains and a .530 ball & .015 lubed patch should do whatever you're capable of out to !125 yards! I had the "Hawken" version in .54 and those were my favorite two loads.

Shoot 60 grains of FFF in my Blue Ridge 54 with patched round ball, was good enough to drop that eight point that now hangs on the front of the side car.

I've got a TC Hawken in 54 cal. and don't plan on it going anywhere. You'll really appreciate the TC quality. Get up to those higher grained loads and you'll know it. Do you "Skin Griz" pilgrim? Gotta watch that movie again.
Scored a used 54 Renegade this last summer for $125 at a yard sale. Few handling marks, whoever had it kept it clean and lubed- NO RUST!. Find it very accurate with 90 grs 2F and a round ball. Great fun too shoot.
