Price Check on a Marlin Model 62 in .256 Winchester
One of our local gun shops has a very nice Marlin Model 62 in .256 Winchester. It's in excellent condition - virtually perfect blue and only minor marks on the wood. Only thing missing is the elevator for the rear sight and it has Weaver scope bases mounted.
What are these things going for these days?
Thanks.

I bought one a few years back at public auction . Well actually I bought a pair . The 256 WIN MAG and a 30 Carbine and the pair set me back about $850 I think . The 256 came with an extra mag also.
Kept them a couple years and never did anything with them and sold the pair on Gunrboker for a little over $1100 if memory serves me . Think I got about $600 for the 256 and $500 for the 30 Carbine .
Now I see them listed in places for upwards of $650-800 .

I bought my 256 off Guns America last year for $700 & had it shipped out to Australia, which cost as much as the rifle. They are great fun, very short throw on the lever, you can leave your thumb on the wrist of the stock & work it with your fingers.

Re: Price Check on a Marlin Model 62 in .256 Winchester
Well, I stopped back today and it was still on the wall, so now it lives at my house. I got it for a bit less than the asking price and got a nice surprise: it came with a set of RCBS dies and about 60 cases formed from Winchester .357 brass. So, now all I have to do is dust off one of my old reloading manuals and put some loads together.
Based on my prior experience with this round, I'll probably start with 75 grain hollowpoints, since the 60 grain hollowpoints are no longer available. When I still had my Martini Cadet in .256, the 75 grain bullets gave the best accuracy of any load, so it makes sense to start there.
Since it already had Weaver bases mounted, I dug out a set of rings to fit and mounted an old Tasco 2-7x widefield that once adorned my dad's 1950 something Winchester Model 94. I took that off when I inherited the rifle and fit a Lyman peep sight in its place, along with an original Redfield Sourdough front sight. Somehow, the scope looked wrong on the Winchester but it was nice having it available when I needed it for the Model 62.
It will probably be a while before I get handloads put together as my reloading room is a shambles because of a construction project, but I'll report back when I give it a test drive.

Got 50 rounds loaded with Sierra 75 grain hollowpoints. 25 with an Alliant 2400 recipe out of the Hornady Manual, 25 with an IMR 4227 recipe out of Chuck Harvey's manual. Both using Federal small rifle primers. Working tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday and hunting preserve pheasant on Friday, so it will be next weekend before I get to shoot any.

Pics or it didn't happen...

If these walls could talk, I'd listen to the floor.

Took it shooting today. The 2400 loads were a disappointment, but the IMR 4227 loads showed promise. Best 100 yard group ran about 1-1/4 inches for 5 shots at 100. More work to do on load development, but that's not bad for a levergun with a 6X scope at 100.

might try the speer 75 gr......it is a tough bullet, and has worked well for me in 25/20 and 25/35s
works well at modest velocities but holds together at higher velocities as well.
