wild boar
I live in southern md. on the western shore of the bay. Right now is open season on wild boar. They have been migrating from the south and rooting up valuable wetlands and crops. Not sure of rules and regulations as of yet. My son wants to go hunting with his mosin nagant and with soft point ammo and i want to go with my lever .357 . His buddy shot one last week, not sure what he was using for gun and ammo. I've never hunted boar before and was on planning on using american eagle 158 grain jsp. I think the mosin is overkill and my .357 might be a little underpowered. Any suggestions as to what factory ammo use on wildbore. (I dont reload). thanks.

Re: wild boar
I don't shoot factory ammo but a buddy of mine down in the Carolinas hunts boars with a Rossi 92 in 357 all of the time. I believe he uses 180gr Remington softpoints. I'll check with him to be sure but in his photos there were always exit wounds. Hope this helps,
Eric

Checked, he does use 180gr Remington softpoints, says you won't be disappointed.

Re: wild boar
Mosin is great. Your .357 Mag lever will be fine but I'd use a factory load with 180 grain bullets - Hornady XTP, Speer Gold Dots, etc.

Re: wild boar
Big fan of 180gr. hardcast, but for boar what u are using will work if u can shoot. Good hunting.

Rossim92 , I've hunted not to terrible far from you !
Was at a place close to "Bud's Creek" called "Allen's Fresh" shot a bunch of whitetail does on a piece of property a friend manages !
Also hunted right across the bay from you in Dorchester quite a bit for Sika mostly but also an occasional whitetail .
Didn't know you guys had wild piggies up there !

Re: wild boar
I've taken plenty of hogs with the AE .357 158gr JSP.
If you run up on a large boar, target the neck area just behind the ear.
The AE .357 through the normal vital area is plenty for any other hog, although the vitals on a hog are slightly lower and forward in the chest cavity.
I'd stay inside 75yds.
Good luck. Once you start hunting hogs you probably won't want to hunt much of anything else.

Re: wild boar
Shoot them right behind the ear, won't have to worry about enough gun or tracking wounded hog.

Re: wild boar
I've had no problem with 158-160 grain hardcast or softpoint loads but recommend you stay away from hollowpoints. If they are available 180 are the option but the most important thing is shot placement.

Use what you got that's legal and kill all you can. Post photos and tell us how to come up and kill all we can (legalities, points-of-contact, etc.). ENJOY!

That's a great picture Ji. Hog hunters everywhere should memorize it.
