I see clearly what You are saying Joe. You want it to be a 30-30. You have 2 options- sell it or change the barrel.

No doubt in my mind the chamber is not right - now, what are you going to do about it? :?:

Rebarrel if you must: or, bore it out to a larger cartridge and bore... Or, sell the dang thing to someone who wants to work on it. A 1950 '94 Winnie is nothing to be sneezed at. Too bad about the chamber.. good luck Dun

Have the chamber sleeved since the bore is like new.

Don't think I saw anyone recommend that but if they did sorry.

Remove the barrel and have a smith bore out the chamber. He can then thread an insert in and rechamber it to .30-30. That saves the factory barrel and chambering.

Oops! missed the post above this one.

Joe: what have you decided to do with this rifle?....

Oly, Hawkeye2,
Didn't know this could be done with high pressure cartridges. Who would do this?

Ray,
No decisions yet. Been busy with other projects and fighting some health issues.
Why?

Joe: take care of yourself!

My 'hunch' -- based on reading your prior threads on this rifle -- is that the fault does lie in the chamber.

Ray,
I'm trying to take care of myself, only this time I need the help of a physician. But I can't get an appointment till next year. Miserable clinic. I even asked to see a different MD if I couldn't get to see the one I normally see. Nope, the bitchy receptionist wouldn't do it. Said the Drs don't like to do that. So, if I can hang on, till next year ........

I'm as positive as I can be that chamber isn't 'right'. Just by the way the rifle splits the cases.
I am going to try to fabricate a receiver wrench from 1" square steel tubing and clear plastic tubing. If that works I'll swap out that barrel. If not, then we'll go from there.

Joe, I don't know who would do chamber work like I suggested and it wouldn't be cheap by the time you ship the rifle both ways, so I guess I haven't helped at all.

I know that it's been done on high pressure rounds (heck, I've seen it), but I don't know if it's common or recommended.

Best,
Oly

Joe, there are so many 94 30-30's that I'd be surprised if a local gunsmith didn't have one or two old barrels laying around his shop. He might part with one for $25 installed. If he knows you, he might even give you an old one for free.

Kirk,

I already have a replacement barrel thanks to Griff. There are no competent gunsmiths in this area. I've talked to all of them at one time or another and had dealing with a few. For the most part they are just ........ well, I can't think of a good descriptive word for them.

Hey JOE, fix the gun. Mechanically you won't get another in an as good condition (other than that chamber/barrel) for less. You've determined that it needs a barrel change. Ship it off to Steve Young to do the work.

Hobie,
Gonna give it one shot myself. If I can't do it somebody else can have a shot at it.

Um, what's wrong with S.M.G.?
