Arrggghhhh! Computers

Computers can be such fun... without which we'd have never had the opportunity to enjoy the company of the mostly like-minded folks on this forum... and others. But, what aggravation that we've come to depend of them SO much.

I keep my log files (DOT regulations require that I keep at least 7 days of past logs on my truck)... and printing via computer is SO much neater than my handwriting... especially when hurried!

All of my fiscal records, income, expenses and such are thusly kept... not to mention those momentos of trips, pictures, emails and the literally thousands of scraps of daily living that seem to be kept in a somewhat organized manner via the personal computer. I also keep records of my personal library on both the computer and my Android (you know just HOW easy it is to buy a duplicate copy of a book... one you've read over a year ago, especially easy when you read about a book a week!

So maybe, you'll understand my angst when on Sunday morning I awoke to have my PC simply with a dark screen and a cursor blinking in the upper left hand corner. I KNEW I'd put it in "sleep" mode when I went to bed. I've since had my son tell me that's not a good habit to get into. I've also since learned that the new solid state hard drives I had installed back in July aren't reknown for their longevity when used as the primary harddrive of a computer that gets new data written on a daily basis... their forte is maintaining data that's only "read"... not written to quite often. But... boy are they FAST!

So, now I have a new 500gig spinning hard drive and am busy getting all my data and programs back in operational mode. Oh, and heaven forbid that one should realize, after the fact, that the older technology is far cheaper on a "per-byte" basis... over 3-times the storage, at less than half the cost! First and foremost were those programs required for work... daily log entries and for said submission to the company along with other forms and communications they require.

And, did I mention, semi-organized keeping of records? Yep, I believe I did... only how the blue blazes to you find that one file that you created with your user names and passwords in one location... in a file name that wouldn't indicate the contents in case your computer was "lifted"? So, now I'll probably have TWO such files squirreled away in some forgotten directory that a thief couldn't possibly locate... for I sure can't!

Griff,

Sorry to hear that. But I understand completely. We've been using our ancient Win 98 back up box for a month now because our new one died. Again. This time hard drive problems too.
So we've got one of those new hard drives in it. Never made it past boot up.

Boy is my wife NOT gonna be happy.

Griff, you probably already do this, but you might add another solid state technology into your mix.

Make an unencrypted back-up on a thumb/flash drive that can be moved from machine to machine. Keep it on your keychain or in your watch pocket.

I keep copies of all my documentation on my desktop at home, on my laptop for travel, and on the flash drive in my pocket in case one of those PCs takes the dump or if I have to use someone else's machine.

:)
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

+1 on the flash drive. They have back-up programs that will prompt you to plug the drive in and automatically duplicate the data to the thumb drive.

Hint on passwords and such: IF you make a word or other "text" type file to "hide" em in, they are easily found. However if you use a graphics program of any sort, even "paint" and add text to a photo, then save it as a JPEG, the task of finding those strings of letters and numbers is much more difficult, especially if ya have a peepot load of pics on yer computer/back-up drives. In other words the would be hacker would have to visually find em, not rely on the computer to spit em out using some tools...

Further hint, a dense, megapixel file with SMALL text embedded wouldn't even be visible unless ya zoomed in on it.....

Yep, an external hard drive takes care of those back up duties... but the process to get all updated and running at speed again... pain in the kiester!
