Which sight should I use?

Post by Jahrs »

I have a Marlin 1894 .357 that I had a scope on but it just didn't look to appealing so I have removed it. Question : Which rear sight would you mount? I have a blank where the rear sight goes and would rather install a side mount or a tang mount sight. Thanks!

Personally, I like the Williams Fool Proof sight. Remove the arperture and you have a ghost ring, or leave it in and have a nice precision sight. Simple and as the name says Fool Proof.

Skinner makes a nice sight too.

Williams 5D, FP or Lyman 66. On the distances used on the 357, the FP and its cool, easy adjustments are not needed, the 5D will work fine.
Kind regards,

Check out this LINK - Leverguns thread on aperture sights - for lots of pictures of different peeps, tangs, etc.

I use a combination XS ghost ring on the receiver and a Burris Fast-Fire red-dot on a scout-mount rail.

Thanks for all of the info men. I am seriously considering, after looking at all of these sights, the Skinner Express sight. It covers the length of the receiver is fully adjustable and has many sizes of apertures available for it. Just the look and function that I am after. Happy Thanksgiving!

I personally like tang sights. They give the longest sight radius, thus the most precision aiming. My SASS rifle has one as do several of my hunting rifles. My 86 in 45-90 has the original barrel sight and a Marbles tang sight. The barrel sight is regulated for 100 yards and the tang sight is set for 200.

I am fond of the tang sights too but I haven't seen one yet for a Marlin 1894. Also I carry the rifle right there where the tang sight would mount.

I have at least one of all of the receiver mount sights
mentioned: Lyman, Williams, and Skinner.

The Williams offer the widest range of adjustment.
The Skinner the least, although it also has the lowest
profile and appears to be the sturdiest. Nothing
wrong with the Lyman, either. Don't own a tang sight,
so I can't comment.

Of all of those mentioned, I like the Williams for it's
wide range of adjustment. If that isn't a concern, the
Skinner is awfully unobtrusive, and it's threaded to take
the inserts for the Williams.

(Didn't help much, did I? )

IMHO, the standard rear sights are pretty good.

I used to, until I realized how much field-of-view is lost due to the rear sight.

Here's the alternative barrel-mounted Marbles 'Bullseye' sight, with a photo-shopped version next to it showing what you lose with the 'standard' rear notch-type sight. The Marbles is the same width as many of the 'standard' sights.

On some guns, a higher front sight is needed, but not always.

I'd screw a Skinner LoPro into one of the rear scope mount holes.
