On top watching the sun hit the eastslope of the cabinets spotted a bull on a south slope feeding and getting some sun but I couldnt close the distance in time and he hit the timber and was gone not enough snow to track him. danny

Kim dem blackfeet can steal your horses and lift your hair, once I got out of the snow the hoarfrost was so bad I couldnt sneak up on a glass of water. usually the bulls are on top but the wolves have changed the elk's habits now they stay in the dark timber and off the ridges I prefer hunting the dark timber anyway just need some snow to quite it down and see where there are or have been. danny

I am going after a cow in these later hunts down here. Lots of tracking snow where I am going. We got about 1.5' up at the section I'm headed to, if I can get there.
It's a shame about them wolves. They ran the elk (and me) out of the Yellowstone and the Gros Ventre country in Wyoming.

Wes they have changed everything kinda like what happened over at Salmon ID elk use to be on the mtn tops at 10K now they re down around town, have a good hunt. danny

I just returned from a guided elk hunt near Gardiner. We saw wolves the first morning and then a lone cow that we guessed the wolves had cut from the herd. Third morning two wolves chased 5 or 6 cows, calves and a spike over the top of us. We saw more wolves higher up where the main elk herd was at. The outfitter hunts a huge area and there was only one elk herd in the whole area. I heard there used to be elk scattered throughout. I never saw a bull. There were about 23 hunters and two bulls were killed. We spent a lot of time looking at empty ground-no tracks, no sign.

I flew over you about 4:30pm yesterday. Looked clear and cold. The weather has been windy up here all day I'm thinking snow is about to blow in. I was coming out of Palm Springs. Good luck hunting. Put the sneak on a big one Eh! I am still wrangling with the Mrs for a kitchen pass to go out in the am. A buddy from work has gotten us permision on a ranch south east of Calgary. I drew an Antlerless Moose tag for WMU 312.

I use to hunt the sept 15 early backcountry hunt north of the park in
95 the herd was # at 20,000+ that came about cause of the 88 park fire
that burned and made habitat then the wolves were introduced the elk
herd went down every year after that the last time I hunted there 05 I
saw over 13 elk in one drainage that had been pulled down by wolves
then a bear came in and took the carcass from them obviously they went and got another the tracks told they story last I heard the # of the
northern herd is 3K and the caving rate is under 5% it takes 30% just to
maintain the herd. Just like for a livestock producer success is in the
young. Cats are a concern too Ive found them on elk kills, a guy I know
was hired by ID F&G to hunt down a huge tom that was making a habit
of killing moose in the panhandle area the tom is on display in the
pawn shop downtown Bonners Ferry ID 11' from nose to tip of tail. Ive
got my ideas about this predator problem but somebody will get their
panties knotted up and Hobie will move this to the politico section. danny
