Took a new hunter out and .... success

Post by 86er »

My friend Darius has expressed interest in hunting and definitely likes to eat deer, hogs and other game I have given him. We tried hunting a week ago and found a deer but he missed. After some practice with my 7mm-08 we tried again. In the special doe area, we found one standing where there was light undergrowth and we could actually see 206 yards through the woods where my rangefinder had an unobstructed view. Darius made a good shot just high of center behind the shoulder and the deer disappeared so fast we didn't see it. I figured it dropped right there so we slowly went towards it. Sure enough, the deer was right where it had been standing. The 150gr Swift Scirocco @ 2700 fps MV left an impressive 2" round exit hole! Congratulations Darius. He's hooked.

Good show Joe and congratulations Darius!

One question though, is that shiny thing on top of the rifle a ray gun? :D

And the 7mm-08 is a great caliber for new shooters. It doesn't kick too bad and is accurate. It is obviously a good killer.

Well done Darius. You had a good mentor. Joe, all these years I've known you I wondered when you would get a rifle you were really satisfied with. It seems you've had a lot come and go in the quest for just the right one. Well, is this it? First you post about 1/2 inch groups, now fantastic terminal performance ... but you let the brand new guy use it! Maybe you were letting him break it in for you. That rifle ought to be a keeper. I'm sure Darius can find one of his own. Best of luck to both of you, Darius in your new hunting adventures and Joe with your new rifle.
