Is there a glue that works on tires (not for 'holes')

Post by AJMD429 »

Evidently ran over some metal banding or something that cut numerous 1/4" deep grooves in the lugs of one of my tractor tires - just to keep it from tearing deeper, is there any sort of suitable glue that would repair it? They are really just cuts, so rubber cement doesn't work, as you can't really keep the edges apart to let it dry properly before pushing them together.

Siping is common in the rust belt and does not decrease the durability of tires. If your tires are in good shape I would not worry too much.

plain old vulcanizing cement would do the job for you. Most any tire store should have it. It might take a bit of ingenuity to get the cleaner and then the cement into the grooves.
Kind regards,

Cyanoacrylate glue, commonly called “super glue”, works extremely well on tyre rubber.

Several years ago, a vandal punctured the side walls of all four tyres of one of my vehicles, when it was parked in the street. The instrument must have been an awl or ice-pick. The tyres were flat. Using a relatively fine awl with a straight, rather than continuously tapering shaft, I worked cyanoacrylate glue into each of the punctures. I used an accelerant to hasten the polymerisation of the glue, but this is not necessary, for the glue will set rather quickly when used in this way. I then pumped up the tyres. I drove the vehicle on those tyres for years and miles afterward, without any trouble.

I find the Loctite brand of cyanoacrylate glue, in the “triangular” bottle, to be excellent.

I daren't tell what stunts I have pulled using super glue on tyres...
The one I will relate is a motorcycle that had a triangular flap split in it and I stuck it down using superglue. It was on for years until the tyre had to be replaced because it was getting hard.

'Tires' are what we keep a spare of in the trunk of our cars, with a flashlight, so we can see to change them.

'Tyres' are what they keep a spare of in the boot of their motorcars, with a torch, so they can see to change them.

Did I get it right...? :D
