Great Hunting Success

Post by jkbrea »

Just got home, :( , from Jackson, Wyoming. Been there for two weeks with my brother and two friends hunting elk. In all, we came back with five elk and an antelope. Three 6x bulls, a cow and a calf. It was surprisingly warm for the area. Everyday was pushing 80 degrees until we left. Nights only went in the mid 30's. Dry and hot. On the first bull, my brother was met by a large black bear when he went to retrieve the rack the next morning. It did not want to let it go and tried to drag it away. He was with a friend and they were able to shoo it away but it ruined the head for a european mount.
Lots of packing meat out of the mountain. They ain't kidding when they say the work starts after you pull the trigger.
I was the only one using a lever. My Marlin XLR 45-70 I had modified. Got the calf with it at about 125 yards. Great rifle. I don't reload. Shot it with Leverevolution ammo. It almost did a backflip when hit. I like the stuff. Its my third elk with that ammo. I got a bull with it last year but it did run a couple hundred yards up a hill before I found it. The hit on that one was a little high.
We got in a little fishing too, love those cutthroats. We saw moose, bears, bighorns, antelopes, and deer during our stay. The scenery with the fall colors was amazing. I'll post some pics in a couple days.

Congrats.
Coming back from the water disposal this evening up near Fontenelle, north west of Green River, I saw a pickup with what looked like a cow elk in the back. He should have tied a red flag on the hoof hanging over the side of the bed a couple feet. Would have made for a good picture LOL.
