Looks like the Military M715 trucks based on the old Kaiser Jeep Gladiator pickups. It even has military style tail lights like the ones on the M151s that we drove all over Germany back in the early '70s...

Those solid axles look like the big Dana 60s that my '77 Dodge Power Wagon had.

I like it!

I wish they'd stop teasing us and actually MAKE a Jeep pickup truck again. Latest word is nothing until 2015.

The new Grand Cherokee is outstanding as is the Wrangler Unlimited for 2012 with the new standard motor (FINALLY), all we need is some diesels now.

I like it for the most part .... but:

>Tires are too big for 90% of what it would be used for.

>Need a hard top for security. Need to be able to lock it up.

>The automatic tranny has to go away. A 5 or 6 speed manual would be very good. Automatic, not so good.

Other than those things, I'd wouldn't mind having one.

Very cool! A jeep that actually looks like, well - a JEEP!

+1 on the manual tranny.

(+1 also on the Ma Duece - I could've used TAHT

I'm a bit peeved that Ford won't make a Ranger-sized, or slightly bigger, P'up with a SMALL, thrifty diesel in it....Everyplace in the dang world except here   If a full sized F250 can manage 15-20 mpg, a diesel Ranger would likely do 35 or better.

When I go to the Philippines every year I usually check out the Toyota , Mitsubishi and Isuzu dealers . And ALL of them offer 4 door 4x4 pickups that are diesel . They call the Toyota a "HiLux" and to be honest they are actually quite nice .

I'd buy one of them, Blaine!

Make it $30K or less.

A 4 liter motor with turbocharger oughta
do it. 4WD, stretched cab, but not
a crew cab, 6 ft. bed, the ability to haul
a genuine 2,000 pounds in the bed,
8,000 lb. or so towing capacity, plow
prep package, heated mirrors, and I'm in.

38" tires are not so bad . However 31 or 32's would be more to my liking !

Many and I mean MANY of the farmers in our area that haul lots of cattle use big 3/4 or ton trucks that are of course diesel and 90% of them are auto trannies . The local Ford guys here claimed the Ford auto tranny was way better then the Ford manual 5 speed .

It looks very impressive. I have had several years of struggle trying to get Jeep to do warrenty work. one issue was a small rust spot that they sent back to the body shop three times in three years before they finally did it right.
I SURE WON'T BUY ANOTHER JEEP.

I LOVED my Wrangler........worst mistake I made was selling it!

This Gladiator re-do looks pretty awesome as is, soft top included. Mount a strong box in it and no big deal.......

+1 on the manual tranny......
No slush boxes for me.

Other than that, I'd like to have one of these!

The last Ford auto tranny in a 4x4 I owned was a C-6. Worked great.
Years ago I had a 79 F250 with a C-6 and had to add a second auxiliary tranny cooler to keep the thing from burning up when I was in 4 LOW out in the desert or mountains.
So, based on those experiences and those I've had with manual trannys, manuals are my preference for 4x4's I'm gonna flog the stuff out of in the outback.

You guys are calling it a Gladiator, i kinda thought it looked like a Jeep Commando front end too ----

The big tires won't make it into production (if it makes it into production at all), and a majority of the buying public now likes automatics, but it looks pretty cool

I would hope it would have a decent sticker price, but i wouldn't bet on it.

That said, i like it :D even though i personally probably wouldnt purchase one ---- If i wanted a toy, i'd lean towards the Ford Raptor .

I bought a 5 speed, 6 cylinder Wrangler last year as a second vehicle -- and i think i have the Jeep bug out of my system. Its still a neat vehicle, but it gets fuel mileage like a V8 pickup truck with 1/2 the capability. But still, i have the hard top pulled off it now and it truly is fun to drive in the spring and fall. Would probably recommend everyone try one at least once ---- plus it gets approving looks from the ladies ! :D (but more likely , they are approving of the 40 year old guy driving around in a Jeep cranking up the NEil Boortz and Michael Savage ! )

I'm not crazy about the 38" shoes myself just from a replacement cost standpoint. My 31"s aren't top of the line by any stretch (Pep Boys Definity line and under $200/ea) but they were spendier than I initially wanted to go. I can't imagine what 38"s would run.

I can live with an auto but would really prefer a 5spd.

Based on the reading and what not I've done, until we rein in the EPA, CAFE and CARB rules (or someone builds a miracle engine), we won't see a small truck turbo-diesel here in the States. I'll be surprised if this Jeep makes it to production with the listed 2.8L TD assuming this actually goes into production at all. The guys on the Colorado and Tacoma forums are screaming for the manufacturers to bring in the TDs they offer the rest of the world but it's not going to happen anytime soon. Even importing one as an individual is all but impossible since Customs won't let it leave the point of entry since it does not meet US standards. Plus with diesel still running higher than unleaded (at least around here from what little I've paid attention) I don't know how cost effective the public would view it.

My thoughts exactly on the appearance. It's probably not a coincidence. But, it's gonna be like the Hummer, just too darned big for where I go, not to mention gas hungry. I'll stick with my "little" CJ-8, thank you very much.

I just spent the last 6 months working at a Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep dealership. I had a couple of inquiries about a new Jeep truck. Jeep isn't saying anything about production right now, so nobody knows if they're actually gonna make these things or not. They had a similar concept vehicle a couple years ago, which was basically a 4 door Jeep chassis with a single cab and a bed. Looked just like a normal Jeep in the front. Right now all they offer is a Mopar aftermarket conversion kit to convert a 4 door Jeep into a pickup truck. I don't think it would be very useful because of the underpowered engine they've had in them up until the 2012 year model.

Dodge is talking about putting a diesel in their half ton pickups, but I don't think we will see anything until 2014-2015, if that soon.

We had a 1968 Jeep Commando my dad bought new . The grill on that looked like a CJ-5 grill and the later ones looked like the later Jeep trucks .

The only thing that had a grill similar to a Gladiator was the Wagoneer from the same time period . And all of that was long before the advent of the "original" Cherokee and the CJ-7 .

Humvees (the original, non-armored models) can go places almost nothing can go.

And they're automatics.

Manuals have their place, but automatic does not necessarily=bad.

I like the look. As a pure 'fun' vehicle.....i'd buy one.

This kit is available for order NOW from your local Jeep dealer for installation on a Wrangler:

At $6000 it's a bit too steep for me, but I'm sure they'll sell some.

In the mean time, Jeep is saying that a new truck is four year off (article on Autoweek.com).

Oly,

That's a pretty cool conversion kit!

I think I'll leave mine the way it is though I do want a brush bar and winch.

I'll just have to live with it until (if) the Nukizer comes out. :D

Jeep Unlimiteds, four door Rubicons and the JK8 are all just trying to mimic the,

Image
CJ8, which was a rehash of the

Image
CJ6.

Interestingly, the CJ6 and the CJ8 weren't "popular" until they went out of production. Seems like folks don't want a thing until they can't have it. Happily, the Unlimited seems to have caught on. And sadly, the four door Rubicon has, also (ugliest darned thing that Jeep ever made, IMHO). The JK8 is closer to the CJ8 than the Unlimited, as I've never seen a factory, or for that matter aftermarket, quarter cab for the Unlimited. I admit the "opera" windows in the JK8 look pretty good, and would address the CJ8's quarter cabs hugh blind spots.

Hmm, wonder if an autobody shop could cut out part of my quater cabs top and put some windows in it?

Picture of my old 1971 1/2 cab Commando. This was my first vehicle that I ever bought new in 1972 sold it in 1977 or '78 (first wives...)

Image

I hadn't seen it again until a couple of months ago, it turned up at a local mechanic shop. Some guy bought it from an estate sale from the family that i sold it to. I tried but he has NO interest in selling it.

Image

It's a little rougher than it was the last time I saw it. Supposedly it has been in a shed since about 1988.

Give them some time and throw enough money at them and sure, they could do that. They could also drop in a 392 Hemi. All it takes is time, money and talent.

Give them some time and throw enough money at them and sure, they could do that. They could also drop in a 392 Hemi. All it takes is time, money and talent.

Amen, brother. I was just talking about that yesterday with my father-in-law. Whoever came out with a Tacoma sized diesel with the ability to tow 6-7000 lbs and get mid-30's fuel mileage would sell a million of them in the first year. I'd be standing in line. I don't know if the feds are preventing it with emissions standards or if the manufacturers just have their head up their posterior, but it seems like a no brainer to me. If VW and Mercedes can put a small diesel in a passenger car, why not in a small truck?

Back when Mercedes owned Chrysler there were rumors every year of a small Mercedes diesel powered Wrangler, but it never happened.

They did a diesel Liberty and diesel Grand Cherokee and both sold like ca ca - lasted only a year or two. That's why they don't bring in more diesels! You can't fault the manufacturers when every time they try to get Americans interested in diesel they just wont bite. I think $5 gasoline would do the job, but with this economy that's not going to happen.

My pal has the diesel Liberty and loves it. The gas engine in my Liberty feels like it was pulled out of a Yugo, de-tuned, and mated to a laggy two-speed powerglide. But at least overall it's been unreliable and breaks a lot...so I got that going for me. Image

Reminds me of the old Dodge Power Wagons. Mount a tripod and Ma Duece in the back for a REALLY good time...
Be nice if it had a I-6 instead of a 4. A V-8 would be even better! There's no substitute for cubic inches or horsepower! And with those tall 38"s, a bit more torque on the freeway would be good!

An automatic is fine. I love my standards, but an auto for off-road is grand.

I drove those old 715s and have mixed emotions about that but it is cool looking...

Nooo, I wish. :D There's an outfit up in Phoenix that does the conversions. They're pretty popular up there in "the big city" where you see $40-50,000 Jeeps all the time.

My Jeep SRT8 gets about 14mpg and I've pretty much had it with that so I'm actually probably not a good candidate for something like that. They're putting a new engine in the Wrangler for 2012 that makes more power and gets a lot better fuel economy and that has me very interested indeed.
