1st levergun and first post

Post by Normac »

My first lever gun was delivered this morning, a Henry Golden Boy in 22LR. Paid about $600 for it, yes I know this is OTT for you guys but this is Norway where a pint of beer costs $12-15
This gun is ostensibly for my daughter but she is only 10 so I hope she will grow into it.

Next gun arrives in 3 weeks, a Miroku Winchester 1892 Trapper Takedown in .357 and this is MINE :D The price for this was needless to say :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

The thing is I now need to mine the collective brains of this forum for comments on sights for both.
My plan is for Skinner Peeps for both of them (basically because they need no smithing to fit) and I have read a lot of good things about Skinner.

Both guns will be used for plinking and maybe the occasional silhouette shoot.

Comments would be appreciated

Welcome, Normac ! !

I think you'll have two leverguns for quite awhile, since IMO the GB's a a bit heavy for kids. ;)

The only Skinner peep that'll "drop-in" on the GB, isn't mounted in a proper position (too far forward IMHO) is the one that replaces the rear barrel sight.

Ditto any Skinner for the Model 92 - Which should also have a receiver/peep sight prep to accept a Williams 5D or FP, a Lyman, or other vintage pep meant for a Mofel 94 Winchester.
The Miroku additionally may have the tang peep prep, to accept a Marbles or Lyman tang peep sight.

Pics of yer new gunz are a requirement here, didjano ? .

Welcome to the forum, Normac. I can't comment on the Henry, but the Miroku '92 ought to be the bee's knees. You'll really like it. Don't have a Skinner either. I've looked at them a number of times through posts made here, but none in person. They look like a nice sight.

Thanks Pete, I kinda knew the GB was big but I have a custom 10/22 that she uses now and she is growing fast. Thanks for the tips on the other peeps I'll check them out.

As soon as I have both in the house, I'll show off a bit and post pics

Image and a big ol' Texas sized Welcome to THE Forum! Congrats on the new leverguns; I couldn't really offer much in the way of advice on sights, as my preferences might not be for everybody. I tend to find barrek sights adequate for most of my needs, and when they ain't, a tang mounted peep is preferred.

Norway??? :o :o :D
Hey, that's where both sides of my roots come from!
My Grandpa used to tell me (our women back in the day could kick most men from the other countries behinds.
He was this huge strapping man that homesteaded in Montana.

I do have to admit (for looks and love, the women from Norway are truly wonderful, I got one).(but then again so are most women)
Maybe the reason like Grandpa said the women were able tp kick the guy's butts from the other countries is cause the guy's wanted them kicked?

Anyhow, welcome to the campfire, grab a akvavit, and set awhile "venn" :D

I like the Williams better - read THIS post before deciding against it; takes just a few minutes to do, and the 'gunsmithing' isn't difficult at all. Seriously.

Installing the Williams-FP is Quick and Easy - http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... =1&t=25689

The reason I like the Williams better is the click-adjustments make sighting-in and adjusting for different loads VERY fast and easy.

Welcome to the fire!

And you made two excellent choices IMHO.

The Skinners have nothing but a great reputation. I have the XS sights which are very similar and like them a lot.

If you are planning on choosing one load for your 92 and sticking with it, then that type of sight is great. If you are going to switch loads a lot, then you may want to look at one that is more easily adjusted and indexed....

OSOK, yeah I will stick to standard loads and FMJs. Frightened myself couple of years back by experimenting with different loads and learned my lesson. I also do not wish to put lead through a $3k gun barrel

Welcome, enjoy the firearms. My daughter decided she didn’t like the lever gun I got her so I got to keep it.

Wow. I'll never complain about gun prices again. What causes such high prices there? Is it something about exchange rates, or tariffs or strict gun laws...?

Welcome Normac. I was in Oslo in 1953. Not far from the palace was a park, and in the park was a beer garden. A 0.5 liter glass of delicious dark beer was 1 kroner. At that time the US cost of that beer was 14 cents. Times have changed, and not necessarily for the better.

Enjoy the rifles.

It is mainly import taxes and greedy wholesalers / retailers The Win-Miroku 92 trapper takedown retails in the US at about $1500 and by the time it gets to me at the present xrates it approximately doubles in price.

The gun laws are presently ok compared with the rest of Europe but are definitely under threat :( after that idiot took out all those kids at Utoya
