Methodist confirmation

Post by Old Savage »

This from a woman to her friend on the occasion of the friend's son being confirmed in the Methodist Church.

Meg M - Yay, congratulations! You know when Seth and Ross confirmed, Curt's parents gave them each a .22. Because nothing says "Praise the Lord" like the gift of firearms!

I was glad to hear my daughter's college roommates were both Mormons; they are far likelier to have firearms, or at a minimum, not freak about her having one, than the Presbyterian branch of the family... :D

Depends if it the liberal or the conservative Presbyterians.

Yep, or in our case, maybe East-coasters vs. Midwesterners.

I will always remember my med school graduation party, when a dear friend of mine gave me a Ruger Redhawk, and some of my fellow classmates seemed sort of surprised anyone would give a gift like that. If I recall though, LESAGEMIKE was pretty impressed, as was I... 8)

Amen. Few seem to realize that there is as broad a spectrum of Presbyterian denominations as there is of Baptist. "Presbyterian" refers simply to a form of church government, and has little to do with doctrine

In the old days, one might have been worried about the Mormons actually using the firearms on the Presbyterians...

Presbyterians have pretty well laid out their doctrine but some of the approx 20 groups tend to put their own interpretation on it. Part of that seems to be whether they look at the Bible as the Word of God or a sort of Hebrew Canterbury Tales.

Actually, the reverse was true.

Every brand of theology living and dead other places, is currently alive in the United Methodist Church. We call it "pluralism". Therefore, it has it's share of rabid anti-gun folks and it's full share of shooter, hunters and pro-gun people.

Confirmation usually takes place when a young person is in 6th grade or 12 years old. I think it is a wonderful idea to give a gun to celebrate the event. Good on them!!!

The Cowboy Church does not seem to have any dislike of firearms.

How do United Methodist stay united with all of the diversity in the group? That is an easy one to answer. No local church owns it property and buildings. The local church may pay for it, but in each deed is a trust clause whereby the local church hold the property "in trust" for the denomination.

Folks can get mad and want to leave, but they can't take their property and buildings with them. Folks have a great financial and emotional investment in their buildings. That is what keeps them in the denomination.

It looks to me like the UMC is in it's death throes. The congregations are shrinking and getting older and each year more and more of them die off. The dead one's don't continue to write checks from the grave. Throw in the recession/depression and money is getting very scarce. They have to downsize and quickly if the UMC will survive. I am not sanguine that it can do .
so.

Whole Christian denominations can die. The Anglican church in Canada went tits up a couple of years ago. Some lawsuits put them over the edge.

Shortly after I was confirmed into the Methodist (not united quite yet) I was 13 or 14 and the first thing I heard of was paper to sign telling me what I must give every Sunday (I usually put in a buck, and on paper route wages, that was pretty good for the mid-60's) Anyway, shortly after, they merged with the EUB church, and since a friend's dad was the minister at the EUB, and he was a jerk, my affiliation with organized religion came to a halt. Nothing I've seen since then has convinced me that I made a mistake.

Tubby... There are days I would agree with you 100%. There are others days I would not. I guess that means there are at least two ways to look at the subject.
