Very nice. I don't know much about them, but I would like to know if a .250 Savage is enough gun to kill something as big as a moose with any reliability. I have never even shot any one of the .25 caliber rounds which are commonly available.

Re: Swamp Donkey
250 savage is fine for moose or elk for the old timers, I never have killed a moose with mine but would if I had a tag!! There are better places to shoot than in the chest for a clean kill, I always go for the head or neck.piller wrote:Very nice. Glad Grandpa never heard that. He used his Model 70 / .250-3000 on just about everything on this continent including moose. Only used his '06 lookin' for bears.piller wrote:Very nice. Re: Swamp Donkey
I did say that I don't know much about the 25 calibers. From the posts here, sounds like they work.

Re: Swamp Donkey
Moose is my favorite of the wild meats that I've tried. Good on your buddy, Danny. My dad shot three up in BC, but I have never hunted one.

Re: Swamp Donkey
Why, a .250 Savage is nothing more than a watered-down .25-06, or a fat-and-slow 6mm Remington; it couldn't kill anything bigger than an anemic chipmunk. Besides, out of a lever-action rifle, it wouldn't be able to hit anything as big as a moose at more than 10-20 yards.piller wrote:Very nice. Re: Swamp Donkey
Danny, I really should take a look into that. Not afraid of a long horse ride. I'll have to get some callouses on my derriere as I haven't been doing a lot of riding.
Hunting around here is getting alot like going to work and I don't feel like wearing a bullet proof vest for pleasure.

Re: Swamp Donkey
Piller theres alot of moose elk deer & bear taken with the old caliber saddle guns 25-35 30-30 32 win 38-55, 250 303 & 300 sav its the shooter not the gun. AJ mentioned the gun magazines, they have convinced people that you need a big magnum a 6X20 scope with 2$ bullets to take biggame. What it takes is knowing where they feed bed and water pick your shot then have a sharp knife. danny

Re: Swamp Donkey
I looked at the title of this several times and passed over lookin' at it. Thought, "what the heck's a 'swamp donkey'?" Finally opened it up... an AHA moment! Congrats to your neighbor Danny.

Wow , I'd like to take one decent moose before I leave this earth !
And one decent elk !
The 250-3000 thing is great if thats what ya wanna do !
I got a few others if oppurtunity for either presents itself that I'll use instead
