leverevalution powder 32 Special.

Post by cpt Dan Blodgett »

Dads old 32 spec 1907-08 mfg 26 inch octo barrel seems to like Hornady Leverevolution factory ammo. Anyone out there reloading with this rather new Hornady powder?
How much is the secret to the Leverevolution ammo due to the pointy 165 grain (lighter than 170) bullet and how much to some kind of tailored slower powder burn?

I believe it's mostly due to the powder. But from what I've read in other calibers, claims are a bit over-rated and there isn't any duplication of factory claims in reloads. IIRC, performance on game isn't up to par with other loads. Again, this was in other calibers.

I've just started "playing" with this powder. It is an ideal burning rate for our 30wcf and 32 Special cases, giving a case full of powder with the 170 grain bullet when you get your upper-end pressure levels. My one success to date was with a 30 Remington (in the Rem 141 pump rifle) and I posted that one over on the pump rifle forum (http://forum.pumprifle.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=78). I have got impressive velocities but not yet the accuracy I want when I tried 30wcf and 32 Special loads, but those were both tried before I discovered the dramatic improvement from using the Lee Factory Crimp Die on my 30 Remington loads. Will work with my lever cartridges again after deer season here and I expect to find some satisfaction 'cause this is one heck of a powder!

My question has been and not answered is this the powder Hornady uses in leverevolution ammo and is it to hot for older rifles like my 93 Marlin 30-30?

Looks like you have internet so its just as easy for you to find load data as anyone else.

It's the same powder used in the 30-30, 308MX, and 32special. Not the bigger bores. Load data listed for the 338MX doesn"t match factory velocity. Hodgdon's 2011 reloading Manual list max load fro 170gr at 36.3 gr compressed ,Velocity 2332 , pressure 35,400 CUP. It doesn't list data for the 32 special , but I've used 30-30 data for the 32 with other powders before with no problem . In fact max loads with other powders are usually a grain or two more with the 32 over 30-30 max loads with same bullet weights.
