What color for front sight?

Post by grahng »

I have a couple of firearms where the sights are black and thought I'd just get some Testors to make them more visible. I know I can use HiViz sights but thought I'd give this a shot(no pun intended) first.
Does anyone have any experience as the color that gives the best visibilty under most conditions?

White-Red-Yellow-Orange????

Thanks

I like white for hunting in the woods, black for target and general shooting.

The reds and greens just don't work for me. They both make the front sight look as big as a garbage can lid. And if I swing the gun they have a tail on them like a comet. :o

Brass doesn't work well for me either.

I find that I need a sight that doesn't blend with the target or the background, and that doesn't draw all my attention to the 'pretty colors'.

+1 on the white/black.

I've found that I rather like the "white line" configuration like XS uses on their front blades.

On my Ruger Super Blackhawk I use the brightest neon pink nail polish I can find, and the put clear nail sealer over it.
Usually takes of few coats of the pink but it really stands out like a sore thumb.
Hint do not use green it is the first color in the light spectrum to go bye bye in low light conditions.

Years ago I painted the front sight on several revolvers bright orange. Seems to work well for me!

I got a bright idea and used Testor's to paint the front sight of my B92 red. It disappears in low light. I will soon be removing the red and using white.

Somethings you just have to learn for yourself  I never considered white either, even though many manufacturers use it.

I have good luck applying Archery Day Glow paint very lightly brushed on front sight.
It has in good light just a little slightly less black color and more of a greenish tint/black color that still stands out well.
In no light when going into woods (hit with a flashlight prior and it glows(we have bears)it is good in poor light conditions still mildly glowing.

I lean towards any bright color that has been mentioned. A very small dia. red or green HiViz with a ghost ring is almost like a Dot scope..point and shoot ignoring the back sight.

Since I live/hunt in a snow zone (white, dontchano ? ), I found that bright orange works best for me, both while "holding on hair" and leading moving/running game.

I have the HiViz sights on three levers, 2 muzzleloaders and a slug gun. They are all green in color and stick out like a sore.....thumb. I don't get any flare out with them, static or on running targets. They are the best of the fiber optic sights in my opinion.

Thanks, Tom

 I have to be different! I hate the bright thingies! Blacked out, matt black.

To many times the light is wrong and a white or other colour front sight glows and over powers the darn critter I'm squinting at!

Matt black, if it's to dark to aim it's time for home.

In the old days when I could see I used yellow nail polish on front sights and it worked well. Now that I'm old and blind, for some reason red works best and have switched to bright red testors paint. It seems to chip less than the nail polish. Have fiber optics on a black powder rifle and a Henry .17hmr bolt action and they work well. Anything I might use at night has a lazer-love them just put the red dot where you want and go bang. Works for me. God Bless.
