Unusual .30-30 loads.
I stumbled in to a large quantity of .30 Luger jacketed bullets for not much money, 86 gr. hardball and roundnose softpoint. Originally had visions of using them in my .30 Carbine Blackhawk but was thinking they might make a fun medium power load for the grandson to shoot in the '94. Any thoughts on a good starting point for powder type and quantity to end up around 18-1900 fps? Yes, they are .308 diameter.

Re: Unusual .30-30 loads.
PM Hobie and/or W30WCF they have done extensive work with the light bullets in the 30-30 duplicating the old light bullet load.

27 gr. IMR 3031 is the old trapper load duplication charge for those bullets.

Re: Unusual .30-30 loads.
Larkbill,
Nice find! At 86 grains, they would likely have been intended for the .30 Mauser. The .30 Luger typically used a 93 gr bullet.
That aside, in addition to the historic load that Hobie mentioned, 18 grs of 4759 will run in the 1900-2000 f.p.s. range as will 12 grs of Blue Dot. 8 grs of 231 or Unique makes a nice load at 1,500 f.p.s. or so. Be careful not to double charge the case.
Would you, by chance, want to sell some of those bullets?

Re: Unusual .30-30 loads.
6.0 of Unique or 5.5 of Red dot both make a nice mild shooting load in the 1200 fps range. If you have Pet Loads look in the squib load section. If you want cat sneeze try 2.5 of bullseye.

Thank you for your data. 2.5 grs of bullseye runs about 950 f.p.s. with a similar weight cast bullet, so with a jacketed bullet, I'm thinking there is a chance that one might not make it out of the barrel .........

Re: Unusual .30-30 loads.
Darn, you guys are good, the 86 gr. are indeed Mauser. I have 5 boxes of soft point and 2 hardball. I also have 5 boxes of 93 gr. Luger soft point.
Sure, I'd sell a couple boxes. would prefer to sell the hardball, but I'd turn loose of a couple boxes of soft point too.
At the rate I'm going I have a 10 year supply of .308 cast bullets from 115 gr and up. Have been shooting the 115 over 6 gr. of Red Dot in the .30-30. Unfortunately the Carbine doesn't respond well to reduced loads so I've been hoarding 110 gr. half jackets and various round nose jacketed when I find them at shows and on the clearance tables at gun shops. I snapped up the pistol bullets 'cause they sounded like something I should have.
I have no idea what to ask for them, is $10/100 too much? If so, what is reasonable?
You guys can pm or e-mail me about the bullets. I just checked my profile to make sure they were turned on.

Larkbill,
Thank you. $10 / 100 is certainly reasonable. I would be interested in 1 box of the 86 gr FMC assuming Hobie would like the other one. If he doesn't, I would be interested in both of the FMC. If he does want 1 box of the FMC, I would be interested in 1 of the FMC and 1 of the soft point 86 gr.
Are they, by chance, Hornady?
Hobie?

Re: Unusual .30-30 loads.
I'd be happy to sell each of you one box of hardball and one of soft point. Send me your address(s) and I'll get them moving this weekend. I'm a truck driver and work a crazy schedule through the week but luckily I'm off on the weekend. You can send me a check when you get them.

Re: Unusual .30-30 loads.
Hornady still makes 86gr canelured jsp's. I haven't tried anything else, but if you have a supply of TrailBoss start at 9gr and work up to 11gr. DO NOT go over 11gr. FYI, the 11gr load will work for 86 up to 110gr bullets. HTH

Re: Unusual .30-30 loads.
What other than weight do these mauser intended bullets have over .30 carbine jacketed soft-points?Canalure?
Re: Unusual .30-30 loads.
Nothing other than they were used in a special PETERS factory loading many years ago. So for those of us that like to recreate history, it is the bullet of choice.junkwrencher wrote:What other than weight do these mauser intended bullets have over .30 carbine jacketed soft-points?Canalure?

Re: Unusual .30-30 loads.
Hello - New member here. I have been loading for the last 4 decades plus 7 years and am an "admirer" of Paco's writings.
Like many of the "poster's" here, I have some experience with reduced loads using many of the powders that have been suggested. One of the first molds I ever bought was a 116gr, 30cal Lee (mine actually produces .311 diameter 120gr bullets using "wheel weights"). I use 8.0gr of Unique with a "tuft" (1/2gr) of "Kapok" as a filler in a 30/30 case. It usually shoots POA at 50 yards. I also use Lee's "Factory Crimp", so a cannelure is not needed. I've not tried any "squib loads" for fear of "sticking" a bullet in the barrel (timid fellow that I am ) and use a Lee powder dipper to charge the cases to preclude "double charging". I've found that 8 to 10gr of Unique seems to work in a variety of calibers (similar to 14 to 16gr of 2400). Your "stash" of 86 and 93 "grainers" should make for some really fun shooting. (You've given me an idea to try some 90XTP's I have "squirreled away" for a 7.62X25!) Best regards.
