Marlin 1894C Vs. Ground squirrels..

Post by Les Staley »

It's lunchtime guys, believe me,, you don't want to see pictures.. sighted in a luepy 2-7 on the little carbine.. loaded some 125 gr hollow point jacketed bullets I ahead of 12.5 gr blue dot. groups under an inch at 50 yds.. cuts the little buggers in half...I've got about 30 acres of grass pasture mixed with a little sagebrush.. idled around on the four wheeler and did the job on 15 or 20 before lunch.. looks like it's gonna be a fun spring if it ever gets here... Gosh Les, ain't you got no stinkin .22 rifles? All I ever use is .22lr, I shot one once with a .17hmr and it was almost blown in two so I went back to the .22's.

It''s been a L O N G spring here in the high country.. still snowin' this morning.. on my last two times home between truck trips, I've had a total of four (4) hours of sunshine without wind.. gotta use your imagination to spice up such a short squirrel season... the 39A's have had their chance, the 17hmr also, last year.. now its the 357 carbines turn.. Les,

I used to load Remington 125gr SJHPs over 17.5grs 2400 and shoot it out of my Marlin 1894. That load wont cut 'em in have it will explode 'em.

The best shot I ever made was on a ground squirrel at 50 yrds with a Marlin 336 in 30-30. Even called the shot. Used the meathod often used by old timers refered to as BARKING A SQUIRREL. AIM FOR THE NOSE or shot at the tree just under the squirrel.

Just aim at the ground under his feet, it'll look like he stepped on a land mine.

I also read a warning about Blue Dot and 125 gr bullets, and the latest Alliant guide has no 125gr Blue Dot loads listed.

Good for you. As far as I am concerned a 50 BMG isn't too much gun for them. My Savage 22 WMR likes to reach out to about 125 yds or so, and touch some. I like watching the tail do the helicopter when they get hit. I only have 3 acres, but it was a vacant forclosure when we bought it. Between the 22's and a few other methods, I have taken about 110 in two years here. prolific little turds.

What's with the Blue Dot warning. I have been using Blue Dot and 125 grain bullets since 1975 (?) in both carbines and revolvers with no problem. Someone loading them too hot again?

But . . . according to the "experts", don't you need a 223 that will shoot 1000 yards, a 20X scope, and a ghillie suit to hunt varmints?

You're breaking the rules Les, don't you feel the least bit guilty? :D :D
