OT- Come on home buddy, if you can

Post by Streetstar »

I never thought i'd be writing one of these, but its a little therapeutic to vent i guess. 2 nights ago, my cat Thomas got a notion to chase mice ---- my wife had to move her car, he got out to do his thing -- he is a 90% indoor cat and survival skills maybe not the best, even so, a cat is still a cat and chasing mice and small rabbits is a preferred activity for many of them.

She didn't notice him slip past her, but she was looking for him an hour later and its like he just disappeared. I pulled up that night from being out of town for several weeks and i tried to look for hours, even getting up several times later that night to scan the property (its a 10 acre place) .

I am a little surprised at how hard this has hit me --- we have joked about reloading bench cats on here before, well, Thomas was my "reloading bench cat" or hanging out beside me while i work on cars cat, he rode in my jeep with me occasionally and he would sit on a little barstool i have and beg for cat treats while i drank beer --- in short, he is my kitty cat friend. Also a pretty good friend to the little dog, Cupcake

While combing the neighborhoods, i stopped to talk to the cattle guy across the road from me , as he has a bunch of feral barn cats, to see if he has seen him, but he did say the coyotes in the area have been pretty active, even though i never see them.

Given the mysterious without a trace disappearance of a cat who never travelled further than 40 feet from the house, and being surrounded by acreages, its not like he had a girlfriend 2 neighborhoods away --thats a definite possibility -

My feline friend is missing and now every coyote i see is marked for death --- i am angry enough that i am going to get some predator calls and go to work this evening until some of my frustration ebbs a little -- plenty of rabbits in the yard every night , yet my kitty was singled out . I haven't found a single tuft of hair , drop of blood or anything even remotely resembling predator activity yet though

The farmer quite succinctly said --- in life, the big ones eat the little ones , and he is right (as outdoorsmen, we all know this too) ---- but he is my friend, so i am upset ---

I haven't completely writtem him off just yet -- there is a slim chance he could be shacked up with a bunch of barn cats somewhere --- I'll leave the light on for him and leave the garage door cracked for awhile yet just in case

but as i said before -- it amazes me how bad i feel about this predicament. Like i was hit in the gut with a sledgehammer. I think it is because i don't have kids that i feel such a strong bond with my critters. I'm not a stranger to loss on the personal side -- my first wife passed away from ovarian cancer, and i recently lost my dad, plus i have went through a dozen pets in my lifetime --- but this is different and weird and i don't like the feeling. The uncertainty stinks

like i said - i had to vent a little

Doug,

I know exactly how you feel. Don't give up on the little guy.
But~ when he does come home take him straight to the vet for a check up. All sorts of diseases can be picked up from fights with other cats and even prey animals.

Take care .

We've had cats disappear for a week or two at a time as well. Hope he comes home.

I am a guy that gets strongly attached to critters, both dogs and cats. My cats are all indoor cats, but Murphy got out a couple of years back. He showed back up three days latter and REALLY wanted to come in for a good meal and a snooze. He hasn't shown much interest in going out since.

I was just sick about it so I can understand your feelings. I truly hope your friend shows back up.

Thats a great pair you have there.....I sure hope Thomas shows back up soon. I am a critter person myself, and I would be beside myself if one of mine turned up missing. Prayers out for a safe return.

If he hasn't been fixed, and given that you have other cats in the vacinity, if he got a wiff of a hot female, he could be occupied for some time... and will probably come back all beat up from fighting with the other males...

Fellas ------------ many thanks for the kind words - believe it or not, after reading your responses i have a little bit more hope that he is just out "pulling a drunk" or something (thats an expression my mom used about one of my uncles when he would disappear for a few days)
. As i said -- i was a little taken aback by my own reaction to the little goofball's disappearance -- I'm at 48 hours now . i fully realize that there are bigger situations in life than a lost critter, and i have lived through quite a few of them --- but this caught me at a somewhat weak point in my life i guess

OSOK -- he is fixed and has lived a pretty sheltered life-- i hope he truly just wants to carowse around for a while

JMiller --- i have taken your words to heart too -- if he gets back home, i'll get him checked out - and am keeping the fingers crossed he'll come back

I was doing some maintenance to my tractor earlier today and i definitely felt it again ---- a little void -- because the darn cat was always hanging out with me otherwise down in the shop area --- .
