ot - Got a buddy for my '92 - Beretta SAA
I got a lil buddy for my Rossi '92. A Beretta Stampede. This is their version of a SAA. Both are chambered in .44-40. I found it in a local shop - I must have passed it a dozen times in the past 6 months. It just so happened that I was walking in when the crusty old (semi-retired)owner of the shop was getting perturbed at a pseudo customer who knew nothing other than he wanted a SAA. He wanted to get the feel of the same gun in different barrel lengths.
The shop had one in .44-40 with a 4 3/4" barrel and a .45lc in a 5.5" barrel. Customer wanted to heft two to try the different barrel lengths - but walked out disgusted because they were different pistols... they couldn't possibly feel the same because they were different calibers.
I have dealt with the (semi-retired) owner before and he is a character who does not tolerate lookers well (especially when they start talking about this and that at the other local shops).
In any case - after the lookers left I told him not to put it in the case... I was gonna walk out with it. He smiled at me with his big grin and said - I'm glad its you
Here she is - 4 3/4" case hardened 44-40

Throwing in a box of ammo makes it a heck of a good deal.
Have you tried the pistol out yet?

I wil post up a report when I take it out (hopefully this week). Cool thing about oddball cartridges is that the shops that have them in stock are glad to get rid of them!! This is the second free box I have gotten!

Good looking combo, how about a shot of the saddle too.

The saddle needs some big time cleaning. I am ashamed to say that it has been down in the barn for 15 years collecting dust (horses were sold long ago). I finally got it out and figured I will polish it up let the kid play on it. I dont see any more ponies any time in the near future.JerryB wrote:Good looking combo, how about a shot of the saddle too.
Re: Got a buddy for my '92 - Beretta SAA
Wow!!! I took the Beretta 44-40 SAA out today and what a trip! It was dead on at the 10 yard mark (indoor range). Using Black Hills ammo. A fair amount of flash from the barrel and powder came out as well. Looked impressive anyway.
Went through 50 rnds and had a big ol grin on my face. It actually felt gentle with the recoil. The only other single action I have shot is a .44 mag Blackhawk... it has a slightly different feel to it
Now I need to find a holster and belt for it.
Also went to a gunshow this morning and picked up 4 more boxes of 44-40. I can see myself enjoying this caliber a bunch. I have also acquired a bullet mold as well as some ? half jacketed ? bullets.
Gotta get the press setup and load some of these guys up.
Cheers

jfg_4, what kind of saddle is that? I'm not familiar with it. It looks a cross between a western saddle and one from Oz.

It is an Australian saddle. Picked it up used at a tack shop in Mississippi in '93 or so.kimwcook wrote:jfg_4, what kind of saddle is that? I'm not familiar with it. It looks a cross between a western saddle and one from Oz.

You are lucky. Most places sell "oddball" cartridges for twice their retail cuz they are rare and collector's items.jfg_4 wrote:I wil post up a report when I take it out (hopefully this week). Got one more update - took a chance on a ebay holster. I was not expecting much - but not knowing what a quality holster would look like - I was pleasantly surprised.
