I picked up a 94 today in 30/30 from a guy at work and it was made in '75 according to the serial number. The blueing on the barrel and everything looks good but the reciever has a brownish/gold petina to it. I don't understand the look. Maybe case hardened that has wore off or the blueing has wore off of a stainless receiver. Really cool looking. Any ideas as to what is going on with this particular one?

Re: win 94 Question
The Winchester 94 was never made with stainless. The "antique" is the only color cased receiver of that era. It should have a gold-toned loading gate (spring cover). And will have some scroll engraving along with it. Otherwise, I suspect someone tried to reblue the receiver and it turned a "plum" color and has faded over time.

Re: win 94 Question
What you have there is a post-64 pre-80?something Winchester 94. The metal they used on the receiver during that time was a sintered metal and they used a couple of different processes to make it take a blue. Neither has proved to be as durable as steel when it comes to holding blue. There are several ways to try to get it blued, none of which look factory, it will take case hardening and color nicely, but the gun will never be a valuable collector's piece, so keep it oiled with a rag, never use steel wool or ANY scrubbie on it and shoot the heck out of that gun.
And post pics please.
And post pics please.
Kind regards,
Tycer

Re: win 94 Question
Yep, what Griff and Tycer said. It's a great shooting / hunting rifle. Don't worry about how it looks as long as it shoots good.

Re: win 94 Question
Man, don't let these guys fool you like that - that finish is actually a very dangerous phenomenon that affects the entire structure of the metal.
It is actually quite dangerous, and the gun shouldn't be fired.
As it happens, I am in the process of developing a treatment for that malady, and as a favor, I'd be glad to take possession of that firearm before it hurts anyone, and try to restore it. If and when I'm successfull, I will of course return the rifle to you.
May take a few years, though...
...sounds like you found a Shooter...!

Re: win 94 Question
Yea, I knew that it wasn't a collector or nothing. Just has that plum look to it just on the receiver. The barrel looks good. I just wanted it for a shooter. Said that he didn't like lever actions and sold it to me for $100.00. Will work out perfect for what I want it for. Doesn't look to have ever been apart. I kind of want to make me a trapper out of it. I will try and get some pics up in a little while.
Thanks
