Any good Chiappa 92 experiences out there?

Post by Aggiecubpilot »

I looked at some Chiappa 92's this weekend and they were very pretty rifles. But the bad press sticks out in my mind. Is anybody pleased with theirs? How 'bout recent production. I'd rather have a miroku 92 but a Chiappa is sooo tempting with no safety... And I think NKJ posted something about swapping certain parts with Rossi ones is that correct?

Thanks guys!

I have not heard recently, but NKJ did post fairly early on he swapped in some Rossi small bits to correct some things he found wanting. He has also posted that Chiappa had him review/consult on the'86, so maybe they listened to him on suggestions for the '92. Can't imagine him not saying something about the '92 in the course of the '86 process! They are pretty rifles, nicer in some ways than the current Mirokus other than just the safety...seem more faithful to the originals at least cosmetically, but the no-safety alone would do it for me.

It's odd that neither company makes a "proper" Trapper (aka baby carbine), both eschewing carbine features--having short rifle-like forearms, no barrel bands (instead, hangar'd) with the sharp rifle butt on one, shotgun on the other...at least one using a octagonal barrel. Actually, Winchester does make one that's darn close...with a lever swap, it's "large loop carbine"--with its 16" barrel would be a true Trapper.

I have one that I got at a great price and it's very nice. Lovely wood, shoots well, no issues.

If you get one and it's great then it's all good. If it needs something do yourself a favor and send it to Nate to have it "squared away" because I'm told that factory service is terrible.

I didn't have a 92 but I bought one of the new 1886 in 45-70 and had major feeding problems from day one. Chiappa's customer service is a disaster. They never answer the phone.
They don't stock any parts for them in the USA they order any part they need for repairs from Italy.
I never did end up getting the rifle back after 4 months I got my money back from the dealer I bought it from and that was only after a call from my attorney. It's a shame the 1886 was a beautiful rifle but I never even got to fire it, it just wouldn't feed the ammo from day one and I tried all kinds.
I'm not metal expert but all the internal parts in the receiver look like they are some kind of soft cast metal.
Maybe I just got a bad one, hope if you get one it works for you.
I ended up buying a Browning 1886 Rifle.

A good mate of mine in Coffs Harbour bought a brand new Chiappa Model 92 casehardened with a 24'' octagon 357 magnum barrel with all the bling he said it looked real smick but wouldn't feed or eject, very unhappy with it( it did shoot accurately single shot).took it back and got a refund. He was not happy that he sold the Rossi 92 to fund the Chiappa.A while later he then bought a Rossi Rio Grande 30-30 and he is very happy with it,and the Rossi 92 rifles in general.

Sad state of affairs in the gun industry today. Seems the makers believe their customer is never gonna fire his gun. And doesn't mind sending it back several times to get the bugs worked out :( :x If u build a 92 rippoff, it should handle .357 hollowpoints, .38 special waddcutters and everything in between. I'm glad we have a forum like this to expose the junk that the're trying to pass off on us.

I hear the new Marlins are no better. darn shame. The best-built rifle I ever owned was a Marlin - made in 1899!

Tman,

The 92 is designed to run with ammo in the 1.5 to 1.75" OAL range. If you have one the will run wadcutters at speed you have a very unique gun.

I tell me customers that levergun are much like semi-auto pistols. There's just some ammo it won't like.
