How to remove Saddle Ring "loop" on 1892 Rossi?????
I picked up a used Stainless 1892 Rossi from a fellow on this list last night.
Thanks Gary, the rifle is great!
But I want to remove the saddle ring and the "loop" that holds it to the side of the receiver. Is this loop peened or are there nuts holding it on the inside of the receiver? How much needs to be disassembled to reach the mounting points?
Thanks in advance!

You might be able to see how it's attached if you take the butt stock off, but you may have to strip the action down. I had a Navy Arms 66 carbine, it was attached with a nut, not sure about the Rossi. I believe the originals were peened in place.
The factory used carbine frames to build rifles now and then, they put plug screw in the holes. There's pics of one or two done that way in The Winchester Book by Madis in the 1873 section.

Re: How to remove Saddle Ring "loop" on 1892 Rossi?????
Why?????
I can't find my saddle...........
It makes noise when I'm trying to sneak out of the house at 3am to go hunting..........
I keep getting my finger caught in it when I fan the rifle like Lucas McCain.............
It reminds me too much of a wedding ring!.................

Well I certainly disagree with that. But in any case we're not talking about defacing a classic Winchester or other collectible. If the guy wants to remove it I say Godspeed and I'd help him do it but since I don't remove mine I'm not able to.Terry Murbach wrote: IT NEVER GETS IN THE WAY
Now if someone wants to offer him good, solid reasons NOT to remove it that's dandy but so far no one has done that.

I've removed the ring on two just by twisting it with a pair of pliers till there was enough gap to get it off the staple.
I didn't bother to remove the staples.
In many years of levergun ownership, I've never found the ring to be of the slightest use, and the Rossi type flops around enough to wear the finish on the frame. Authentic looking, yes, actually of any benefit whatever, no.

The Rossi staple type saddle ring is mounted by peening the legs over there on the inside of the receiver. Take the stock off then the lower tang and hammer assem. With the gun in a vise bottom up you will be able to pry them back somewhat straight. Then, using a tapered brass drift in the staple you should be able to pry it off.

Thanks Steve.........
I'm on it!
Next, this rifle is being converted into a Take Down.........I'm going to use my motorcycle this year to do some hunting. A TD will fit just right in one of the painers.

I used to have brain storms.
Then I figured out, just because I can doesn't mean I should.

Tycer,
If you find that low-hanging sling carry useful, then you've found a reason to keep the ring.
For me, I'd find that method of carry very annoying.
I don't ride horses, and there's just no other method of carrying a levergun in a truck, on the ATV, or on foot that'd involve me using the ring. If I needed hands-free carry over a shoulder, I'd install a regular two-point sling & go with that.
I don't knock anybody who finds a use for the ring, and I'm kinda puzzled over a reaction to the idea of removing it.
If you like it, keep it; if you don't, get rid of it.
Terry,
The Red Ryder my wife gave me as a nostalgic birthday gift about 20 years ago came with a dangling leather thong about like you're describing. It did, sorta, silence the ring, but it also got caught between the lever & the stock just about every third time time I closed the lever to fire a BB. The thing lasted about 10 minutes, and I've never had the slightest urge to have a section of thong flopping around loose on a real gun, risking it interfering with the trigger or hammer or lever.
I know it's a traditional thing, but on my Rossis with no history & no collector value, it's gone.

IT's GONE!
The Saddle Ring is no more......

Needed to dissassemble rifle to get a small hacksaw blade to cut the peened ears off the back. After that it pulled right out.
I then drilled the holes for 10-32 threads and a couple of blind screws.
More betta!

I like your solution! looks good to me...
I did find a use for the saddle ring on my Buffalo Bill Comm. 30-30 -
I use it to anchor my thumb when shooting offhand in silhouette matches (and only because of the way I hold the rifle). Other than that it's about as usefull as tits on a boar...
I'm hoping to pick up a Rossi .357 for the pistol cartridge matches. They're nice rifles after a little working in...

Although this rifle was "worked on" by a lever action gunsmith, I found a whole bunch of rough areas inside. A couple hours with my India stones and I've got it running slick as a Korth......
