Deer Season dreaming

Post by JReed »

All this hot weather has me dreaming of cold winter mornings, broke in boots, and comfortable warm hunting cloths. My wife is starting to get bored of me watching hunting shows all the time and is waiting for the season to start so I will be out of the house and she can get the TV all to her self so she watch her stuff.

How about y"all?

I love to Fish, but I love the early hunting season when I can mix my 2 favorite Past Times ! Deer Archery opens up in early September. The days are warm, and the nights cool. This Hot weather Wears on you after awhile. I feel bad for the guys down south in Florida, Texas, Arizona....etc. Now I know what you go through most of the year. I complain about the heavy snow, but it doesnt last all that long.

Thats funny

So I made a trip to Wally World today and noticed that they are starting to put out all their hunting gear and clearance the fishing gear. Starting to get itchy. Was out for a bike ride last night with my wife and we saw several does.

SO who is hunting with what this year? On base I am limited to shotgun or muzzle loader. So I will be taking out the TC Renegade with Round Balls. Should do a number on these smaller southern whitetails.

You should get back out to the coast as A-zone opens in about two weeks.

I'm sticking close to home in D11 and D13, and I want to make a point to hunt over Miss November and see what happens. I also want to go in deeper with the bicycle and see what's in there. I'll probably take the Handi-Rifle in .243 since it's so light.

This may be my last deer season since I don't need all that meat. We'll see, it's fun but the last few years the area has been full of 10 am sky shooters and tree huggers. And it's too hot. I'm gearing up to switch to coyote hunting which I can do in the winter.

I've got a huge committment that will keep me away from home and the hunting field all of Aug and Sept. I am going to try to squeeze in a hunt of some sort on a weekend during that time. I plan to bow hunt in Texas as much as I can in October because another committment will keep my away and out of the field from the last week of Oct to second week of Nov. I am going to go WTD hunting in TX, GA and NY in November on consecutive weekends. Up to this point all my hunting will be with a muzzleloader - both traditional and in-line. For the first two weeks of December I have a CO mule deer tag that I've applied for many years in a row and finally got! That'll get me through 2011 and I hope to pick it up again in 2012 with waterfowl and upland bird hunting. And, you never know what invites pop up that I can pull off for a day or two on short notice!

For deer camp in end of October, I'm brining my newly acquired Browning 95 30-06 and my backup (hopefully soon to get! :| ) a Marlin 336 in 356 Winchester being worked on by Nonneman. I'm actually getting more excited about the up coming bird season (early Oct.) have been seeing quite of few grouse as of late.

The summer heat and everything turning brown turns my thoughts to deer killing. Yes! Two more weeks as El Chivo says. It just ain't deer huntin unless its 100+ degrees! Going to blood the new barrel on my 264WM this year.

That's what I've been thinking about lately. Since we have 2 jeeps and no trucks I decided to set up a little differently this year. My inlaws have a 5X8 enclosed trailer that's been sitting in their backyard for 3 years. I figured I'd set it up as a hunting/fishing trailer for the season. I'm picking it up tonight and checking lights, tires, bearings, whatever it needs and then I will clean it out. I'm putting in the generator, tents, cots, hunting blinds, camp kitchen, stove, shovel, chainnsaw, fishing gear, coolers...etc. This way I can hook up with either jeep and be ready to go after loading up clothes and guns. Then I can back it into the third garage bay and close the door. My 14 year old and I drew out this year and hope to get some use out of this setup in between his football games.

I'll use a .44 Mag most likely, Win 240 SP or (more likely) reload equivalent.
  • Good Weather - Ruger 96/44, 3-9x scope & laser (really helps at dawn/dusk) - I like the removable box magazine.

Bad Weather - Ruger 77/44, NECG peeps - gun is all stainless/synthetic and impervious to elements.

Mid-day good light - Marlin 1894, Williams FP ('ghost ringed') - really my favorite all-round 'deer rifle' if enough light to use the sights.

Mid-day if I 'stalk' vs. 'stand' - Rossi 92 - 16", Marbles 'Bullseye' sight - fast sights, but harder to adjust precisely vs. FP's.
MAYBE I'll give a .45 Colt or .357 Mag a chance for the 2nd deer... 8)

Image

In complete disrespect of his forum name, 44MagHunter (pictured above) will again be using three razor blades  on the end of a stick with plastic 'feathers' on it, that he flings in the general direction of the deer using some sort of carbon-fiber, cams-and-pulleys contraption.

Image

I keep telling him a REAL deer-hunter would stick with traditional, 100-year-old technology like a Marlin 1894, instead of that new-fangled stuff.

I think his first gun was a full-auto, though, so it figures he'd break from tradition...

Last couple years we've been hunting from late july until mid to late january !

So you can say we darned near hunt half the year !

And the other 6 months you can rest assured I'm messing with cast bullets in 444's or the 45-70 as well as testing jacketed loads in the variouse RUger #1's !

So as far as I'm concerned it's turned into a year round thing now !

Our wally world has not made the change yet....
they dont put much out anyway....because we are a beach town
and most would rather fish!
I have already started scouting with google earth...to try to find more remote places to hunt...I may go for a hike and scout in the local WMA that i drew a quota permit for...
I will be using my hoyt bow...Knight in-line muzzle loader,...Winchester model 70 30-06
amd of course a lever or two or three...most likely the 38-55
quarry will be deer ..wild hogs and .........fall turkey with archery equipment
Work is so slow I should have plenty of time to hunt...

Absolutely can't wait for deer season(still got a wait,mid-Nov)
Pretty soon(mid-Sept) will be changing some of our present daily hiking routes away from certain areas just to let the bucks start settling in.(also have fall turkey too)

Again this year hunting deer(no lure/bait/no cover scent/no special clothes/hunt on ground with open sighted either 7MM Mag or Ithaca Deerslayer.Though will clear some new narrow shooting lanes next month and hope the wind blows in my favor deer season?

When I even mention Deer season the wife frowns and says(hope you aren't spending another grand this year on a mount?)

I say-------------------hope I am!

Archery season is a month away. Longbow or Mathews will be in my hand for first two weeks. Then Muzzleloader comes in for 2 weeks, my custom flintlock in .54, or my .50 T/C bone collector will be in my hand for the next 2 weeks. Then back to archery till afer Thanksgiving. Then general season comes in and I will use either the Rizzini o/u in 9.3x74R or my 1886 in 45-70. Late season will be back to bow or my .54 Flintlock.

Early rifle season starts on the 13th down in the land of the Condor. I'll be there. The kids have reported seeing 23" 3 pointers( 6 to some of you folks) in full velvet and some big forks as well. :)

I think for the first time in 20 years my 336 .30-30 will not be hunting with me.
My son turned 9 and is big enough to shoulder it and shoot it well.
I decided to let him carry it and I went and bought myself a 1895 in .45-70 :D
I am actually pretty excited to get out in the woods with it, but I don't know if I will be able to look over and see my 336 in someone else's hand, even if it is my son :|

Early goose season opened yesterday. I couldn't get out, but the air is starting to smell different, and there's almost a crispness in the air. It gets my blood going and I can't wait! I may be carrying a recurve or .50 cal flintlock during the earlier seasons and my 1953 vintage .30-30 winchester model 94 for rifle season after Thanksgiving. Actually, I'll probably do more squirrel and duck hunting than bow hunting. I don't know how much rifle hunting I'll actually get though...we have our first baby due right in the middle of deer season! Talk about poor timing!

You need to head to the western part of North Carolina for the piggies and you could also get a bear !

Also some pretty decent blackies on the seaboard not to far from Elizabeth City .

Thanks 6pt. I may have a couple of leads on the pigs. Just need to do some serious networking to try and drum up a spot for bear. We have only been here 3 months so it has taken time to learn the lay of the land. If I dont get a chance at one this year I will for sure have a plan lined up for next year. :D

Dude , I've lived in Virginia my entire 50 years on this planet and I never had oppurtunity to shoot a bear until I got in with a friend in some Damage Control Permits in 2009 . Now I've gotten two kinda small ones in about 14 months .
