can't bing myself to see that one.
Re: OT..Cowboys and Aliens?????
Yeah, I thought Harrison Ford had more dignity then that.
Re: OT..Cowboys and Aliens?????
Sure Academy Award winner.
Win 92's obviously anachronistic but space zap guns all top notch and period correct.

Re: OT..Cowboys and Aliens?????
A lot of sci-fi fanboys (myself including) are eagerly awaiting to see it. It opens this weekend.
From the previews and cast interviews, this is not a comedy or satire, they played it straight. Sleepy little western town invaded by aliens
I'm betting Daniel Craig's character is some sort of interstellar sheriff.
Harrison Ford? Maybe a chance to play a bad guy and I'll bet he does it well. Maybe he'll redeem himself from the embarrassing spectacle that was that last Indy Jones movie.
Face it guys. There hasn't been a good western (to me) since Silverado. Hollywood's idea of a good science fiction movie is something involving teenagers, most with large breasts. And I can't think of any original movie or tv show that hasn't been re-done except Gilligan's Island. For all I know it's coming out next summer.
So yeah. Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford together in a movie? I'll take that.

Im not a scifi guy.....but love westerns. Im torn with this one. I heard it was a really good movie.
I just keep thinking though......with a 200mill budget like they had on this movie.....they could have made a really great western movie that was more traditional.

I love Sci-fi and will be seeing this movie. Directed by the same guy that directed Iron man so I think it ought to be good. I'd take a good western too, but they're few and far between.

The movie is based on someone's book and Stephen Spielberg thinks enough of it to be involved. Let's face it, no one is going to make a serious western any longer, so why not have some fun. I would rather it be cowboys than fraternity guys and babes at the mall. . . . .

I guess you skipped over True Grit 2010. That was about as serious a western as they ever made.Meeteetse wrote:The movie is based on someone's book and Stephen Spielberg thinks enough of it to be involved. As for Cowboys and Aliens, why not? Who says aliens never made it here in the old west?

I disagree with the statement that no one will make a serious western anymore.
True Grit was one.
There are a few more in the pipeline also. Some of which Larry McMurty (spelling) will have his hands in.
I'll make another thread as to not take away from this one.

Re: MOVIES - Cowboys and Aliens?????
I'm really torn on this one. IMO it will be absolutly great or a complete bomb. I have heard it getting good reveiws as a hold no bars Western if you can believe that. I don't go to theaters much any more but will sure to be renting it whne it comes out on DVD unless you guys really rate it bad. For the record, I like anything from sci-fi to zombies to westerns to action to about everything.

It's at the top of my daughter's list. From the trailer, I don't think it's going to be that great, but may compare to Independence Day for entertainment.

Sci Fi and Westerns - combining my two favorites. Yep, I'll see it - even if both main actors are anti-gun twits!

Yup, totally forgot about the "True Grit" remake. Guess that is because I haven't seen it yet. DVD is sitting on my desk. Regardless, if aliens and cowboys brings people to the theater, more power to them. I for one think it will be fun even if it is a little cheesy. I hope you are correct about McMurtry (sp).

I'm looking forward to it. I like sci-fi and westerns. I might even put my boots on the filth they call carpeting in theaters, between the spilled candy, sodas and buttered popcorn, I ain't walked in cow stuff that's any tackier! Besides, even Lucas said that Star Wars was nothing but a western set in the future... or was that Spielberg?
Remakes don't count as "new" westerns. The best western of the last 20 years still ain't out on DVD; Tommy Lee Jones' Good Ol' Boys. If you ain't seen it yet, it's for sure one you need to fix the VCR to watch!

Re: MOVIES - Cowboys and Aliens?????
And I must apologize, in previous post I said the only original idea western that had popped up was "Silverrado". "Open Range" is another one of my favorites.
"True Grit" was another hollywood remake-knock-off. With the talent of the people they had involved they could have done an original story but they were too scared to, they had to play it safe.
"Cowboys and Aliens" opens this weekend. We'll find out soon enough.

Re: MOVIES - Cowboys and Aliens?????
Yeah, it was good. Seemed like a lot of 1866 carbines being used. Also a Spencer. The most modern gun in the movie looked like Harrison Ford's Colt 1873. Unless, of course, you count Daniel Craig's wrist band.
Perhaps the experts will spy some more modern firearms or mistakes. A bit light on powder smoke for all of the BP arms being discharged ... but hey, they've got to make a movie you can see. Lots of action though. Definitely going on my BluRay "to acquire" list.

Did Jimmy Blond even care if his whiskey was rye or corn? I can't stand Daniel Craig since he ruined James Bond. Not suave, not debonair, not sophisticated, just an angry Brahma bull in a china shop.

I like him in that role actually. To me, he has the appearance of someone who actually trains like a military man would ( a stereotype for sure, because when i was in the Army, i saw big guys who were a little soft around the middle , as well as beanpoles, - all doing incredible things- not everybody has a Rambo physique in the real world )piller wrote:Did Jimmy Blond even care if his whiskey was rye or corn? Pierce Brosnan OTOH, looks like his training program consists of eating right, maybe 50 pushups a day, followed by an hour by the pool hanging with chicks -- but i guess that actually is closer to the Bond persona
Looking forward to seeing Cowboys vs Aliens

Re: MOVIES - Cowboys and Aliens?????
Saw it yesterday in Casper.
I liked it, though I had some issues that only "Hard SF" Geeks and "Period Gun Nuts" would appreciate. (the gun ones have already been mentioned...)
As it is, I can clearly identify the 50+y/o pulp SF stories that had seminal influence in the amalgam they created.
All in all, good popcorn fare. Even the Wife liked it.

I grew up reading the Flemming books and thought Daniel Craig did a more true to the books Bond than any of the others. In that context I like him in that role very much.piller wrote:Did Jimmy Blond even care if his whiskey was rye or corn? I can't stand Daniel Craig since he ruined James Bond. We saw it this afternoon. Even Blondie liked it and she's neither a fan of Westerns or Sci-Fi.
I didn't think Daniel Craig would make much of a cowboy but i thought he did a pretty good job.
Anyway, we liked it and I'll pick up a copy as soon as they are available.

I took my son to see it last night and while I would have rather seen that 200 million budget go to a more traditional western I knew going in what it was and enjoyed it for that.
The guns did have light loads. I thought I seen a 1892 in there but the rest that I noticed right off the bat was the 66 carbines and the Colt cartridge conversions and Ford's 1873 Colt.
Overall I thought it had pretty good western clothes and guns. Another viewing of it may reveal more but what I seen/remember things looked good........for what it was.
Re: MOVIES - Cowboys and Aliens? -[SPOILER ALERT]-
Only hardware thing I noticed that bothered me is the very nice stag handled knife that Harrison Ford gave the kid was supposedly one he'd had since he was a kid. Well it sure looked shiney brand new! I don't think a 50 year old carbon steel knife would have been so nice and I also don't think it was an appropriate design (the blade) for the times, but I could be wrong on the latter.
The only other snort the movie got out of me was the sudden change in the tide in the cowboy's & Indian's fight against the critters. Them things would take down a Siberian tiger or a Kodiak bear and not break a sweat! Appropriately they were kicking some serious keester when allofasudden (at the right plot point in the movie) the cowboys seemed to get the upper hand and started killing 'em left and right. [Insert snort] Riiiiight. I liked how they infiltrated the ship and the gal blew it etc. -- ALL GOOD -- but the fight with them things would have been a rout pure and simple.
Not sure why everyone is so down on ol' Harrison in his recent turn as Indy. I thought he did just fine. That movie wasn't so good, but I didn't have a problem with his role in it. Well, I thought he was pretty good in this one too. His character would chew a man's head off one second and yet obviously had a soft spot for kids - an interesting and complicated role I thought.
OK, one last gripe. The closing quip in the movie as the protagonist rides off down Main Street. Sheesh!! The old time Western film makers would have come up with something a heckuva lot more memorable than those lame final lines from Ford and Craig, and the stupid smile on Ford's face was out of character for the role. He seems to have some sort of "leave 'em with a smile" marketing ploy that he lives by. Probably made sense when his main product was beefcake/heartthrob stuff. Well it was stupid in this case and the director should have known better and re-shot the scene until it did an old Western proud. Eastwood would have gotten that scene right!
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it,

Re: OT..Cowboys and Aliens?????
+1 Silverado to me was entertaining, but too much of a "pop Western"--think "Alias Smith & Jones." (This new one perhaps stands to be also but seems to make no other pretenses given the title) Open Range, Unforgiven and True Grit were leagues above Silverado, as was Broken Trail though made-for-cable.marlinman93 wrote:Wow! Face it guys. There hasn't been a good western (to me) since Silverado.
Appaloosa I had very high hopes for, maybe unrealistically so. Though shot well, was a disappointment--kind ofa plodder to me. You notice I didn't initially mention 3:10 to Yuma. Again, lots of hopes. A dunce as the protagonist (rifle guy with family he stupidly/naively/unnecessarily left--permanently it turns out. I really struggled to like the would-be "hero.") Otherwise ok and shot well, but a weak ending. As with anything, JMO.

I think the BIGGEST annoyances to me were the Deus Ex Machina at the Apache Camp and the biologically improbable aliens (I mean... you put your heart there, why?) who were more interested in acting like rabid devourers than aliens with zap guns...

Re: MOVIES - Cowboys and Aliens?????
I think the BIGGEST annoyances to me were the Deus Ex Machina at the Apache Camp and the biologically improbable aliens (I mean... you put your heart there, why?) who were more interested in acting like rabid devourers than aliens with zap guns...
C2N14... because life is not energetic enough.

Alright, I'll go ahead and put my two cents in,
It works for me, although Daniel Craig with no English accent was a bit weird!

Went with the wife and one son and we were thoroughly entertained. Good action, too. Glad to see lots of Yellow Boys and Colt Walkers. The details were off, in that real black powder would make a whole lot more smoke. Overall, I think it was well done. Hollywood should make more movies like this that focus on the good side of guns.

I dont think I am going to waist my time and money.....
I'd rather watch an old western.....

LETS GO SHOOT'N BOYS
Re: OT..Cowboys and Aliens?????
The new one was better in some respects than the old one, which had an ending which was totally improbable. I did think that Glenn Ford was the better bad guy.gak wrote:You notice I didn't initially mention 3:10 to Yuma. Again, lots of hopes. A dunce as the protagonist (rifle guy with family he stupidly/naively/unnecessarily left--permanently it turns out. I really struggled to like the would-be "hero.") Otherwise ok and shot well, but a weak ending. As with anything, JMO.

Re: MOVIES - Cowboys and Aliens?????
Just got down to see it...Once again it’s us low tech humans vs. aliens, but this time to make it funner, it's a Cowboy movie...Wifey & I liked it.
Misfits, characters and clichés abound... Let’s see now, in the mix we have an amnesiac, who is as fast with his guns as he is with his fists, trying to figure out what’s happened to himself, and a knock out good lookin’ woman that reminds him of someone... Then you’ve got yer various and sundry skeert town folk that hardly know one end of a gun from another, ruled by the ruthless & bloodthirsty ex military Cattle Baron, replete with his spoilt rowdy son. Plus roaming out in the nearby badlands you’ve got yer Apaches and a gang of vicious dynamite wielding outlaws. These are mighty Pea Owed humans that forgo their differences and ride together against the dirty no good gold grubbin’ outer space aliens, here steal our gold and mess with the human inhabitants for experimental purposes!!!... YEEEEE Haww!! & slap yer Grandmaw it’s a fun flickershow... Carefull now... dont look at the light...

I thought it was a good movie. Movies are made to entertain. I was entertained.
Re: OT..Cowboys and Aliens?????
Let's face it, no one is going to make a serious western any longer,
He said "make", not remake.
