OT Watch the 50th Daytona 500 or go shooting or both
Well there's a ton of people here in Daytona
and this should be a very interesting race with the new car...
These cars are very unstable and they are moving all over the
place in the draft.....I expect to see a very big crash unless
the cars get strung out in a long line..
I guess I'll go skeet and trap shooting in the morning, shoot
a few rounds and then watch the race...It should be pretty exciting
Toyota has a good chance to win...Micheal Waltrip looks strong,
and Tony Stuart is running good to....Junior has a great chance...
But I would like to see Bobby Lobonte win in the Petty car but
I doubt he can.... I'll pick Waltrip to win....
The 2 Duel 150 races are today which will set the line up for the race
These two races are better than the 500...You have to race your way into the 500 and most of the drivers go nuts....beat'n and bang'n and
trading paint.

Our once a month winter trap league is this Sunday, and at the club I shoot for, so I'll have to be there from 9AM to 4PM. Looks like I'm going to miss half the race.

Well, I planned and booked a hog hunt in S.C. a few months ago, not even considering the 500. We'll be hunting on Sunday but hope to see at least the start of the race at our lunch break and maybe be back before it ends. I do enjoy watching racing , especially Cup, but, I'll have to admit sitting in a stand is probably at least one rung higher for me! It will be interestesting to see just how well the COToday (formerly,COTommorrow)
will perform for the very 1st time at Daytona though.

Anybody remember Fireball Roberts? Cale Yarborough? Buddy Baker?
Those guys could race! This stuff today just ain't the same... sorry.
I'd give every levergun I own to see what would happen if Jr. pulled a bump draft on Cale.
Ahhhh the good old days.

They've changed the race way too much for me. Way to many new rules. The cars are too similar. You can't tell them apart unless you look at the decals, they are almost IROC cars.Rusty wrote:Anybody remember Fireball Roberts? Cale Yarborough? Buddy Baker?

If I have something to do I'll tape the race and watch it later. I've done that many times.

I agree that the cars are all too similar with the COTF. It seems that it's more about the drivers now than the teams ... and I mean the mechanics that put their skill and knowledge into the suspension design, the powerplants, the skins. All of that seems lost with a uniform car.
Of course, the drivers are the face of NASCAR and I suppose it's a savvy marketing decision to focus more energy there. It's far less about brand loyalty now that the cars are so similar ... Ford, Chevy, Pontiac, Chrysler. Now the brands are Tide, Home Depot, Doritos, Miller, etc.
I do catch the vintage NASCAR races on the Speed channel every once in a while. Back when the limit was 7 liters and you had the 426 Hemis slugging it out with the 427 Chevy "procupine" motors, etc.

I've kind of turned my back on NASCAR since they let Toyota in. I know some of you could care less but I'm an old guy who lost relatives in the Pacific - an uncle at Pearl Harbor (USS Oklahoma) 7 Dec 41 and another uncle in the Pacific Campaign and a cousin in the Philippines.
Yep, it was a long time ago but my family hasn't forgotten and we don't buy anything made in Japan as far as possible and certainly no frickin Jap cars/trucks/etc.
So, if it doesn't snow between now and the race, I'll probably go out to the range for awhile and maybe try to catch the finish.

There's a guy I shoot trap with, he loves to razz two of the guys on his squad about them driving Toyota's, and says how he'd never buy one. But what is his trap gun? A Browning BT-99, made in Japan.Modoc ED wrote:I've kind of turned my back on NASCAR since they let Toyota in. I've owned three vehicles, all GM products and have considered myself a "Pontiac Man". The current one will probably be my last. With all the problems I've had with them, especially the current one, I can't support GM anymore, especially when I see how few problems my mother has had with her Toyota.
As for the current state of NASCAR, the past few years have been pretty boring, and I hate the Chase. I am looking forward to see how the new cars shake out though.

A few years ago my wife and I had two vehicles in our family. A Ford Crown Vic made in Canada and a Nissan P/U made in Tn... which one was American?
I shiver at the thought of how much of my Dodge Dakota was built in Mexico.

Do you mean the racer with the COOLEST nickname ever...Fireball(real name, Glen, I think) Cale, the only man to EVER win 3 championships in a ROW!, and BB, who was the first stocker to average 200MPH around a closed track? Seems I remember a little something about them...plus a fella named Bill (Elliott) who set the record speed for a stock car on a closed track..... Talledaga, I believe at 212MPH. By the way...please do check me if you want as it was all done by off the cuff memory! They were all GREAT, but I enjoy some of the new drivers as well!Rusty wrote:Anybody remember Fireball Roberts? Ed, I checked Wikipedia before you ever posted Cale was the first to ever have a qualifying speed of over 200 MPH at Daytona.
They also said it the fight after the race at the 1979 Daytona 500 with Donnie Allison that rocketed NASCAR into the popular event that it became. The '79 Daytona race was the first one to be broadcast from start to finish.

Nascar hasn't been the same since Dale Earnhardt died. I think they were actually afraid to make too many changes while he was around, and now that he's gone, they've completely screwed up the series.
On-the-fly rules changes, Toyota, points changes, and the "lucky dog" rule have completely killed off all my interest in the sport. I haven't watched a race since 2001...

AAAAAAAAAAAAA...but I think you'll find ole B.B. was the first to EVER do it! That fight is a classic and just the thing, apparently to put the "good ole boy" sport on the map! I do hope I'm able to catch some of the race in between sits in a stand lookin' fer hogs!Rusty wrote:Ed, I checked Wikipedia before you ever posted Cale was the first to ever have a qualifying speed of over 200 MPH at Daytona.
