I've owned a pair of the Sako Mannlicher stocked square bolt rifles in 222 REM . One was a carbine with a 20" barrel while the other while still mannlicer stocked had a 24" pipe !
Also had my hands on a older 20" mannlicher Sako in 22-250 that was very nice !

Sharp! I think they're talking to me too.
I have an older Sako in .222 rem. That little rifle makes the tightest groups I've ever seen.

The Sako's nice, but the BRNO Effect really rings my chimes ($1200-$1500)

I'm going to show my ignorance here, why is the stock full length on a Mannlicher? Form or function?

I think the style harks back to the muzzleloading Jaegar rifles. They were short barreled hunting rifles or muzzleloading carbines of the day so to speak.

My thinking was along those lines, but as stated I'm ignorant of the Mannlicher style.

AFAIK, the mannlicher stock style originated in the Bavarian Alps, to protect the lightweight barrels of stalking rifles from rock knocks, throwing off the zero, and to provide a warm forward ahndhold while aiming the rifle from an awkward prone/leaning stance on some mountain crag.
Austrian gunmaker Fredrich von Mannlicher so stocked his early military & sporting rifles, and later makers like Mauser, Steyr & others knew a good thing when they saw it.

Also because walking in the Alps tends to highly recommend using a walking stick. Fully stock the rifle, and you now have a walking stick. Same reason as on muskets.

I have a Forester in .308 that is a great shooting rifle. Sexy, too.

I have always liked the looks of Mannlicher stocked sporting rifles..
About three years ago I picked up a CZ550 FS in 6.5mm Swedish. It is not as classy looking as more expensive rifles, but it is very solid, has integral scope bases, and is accurate. One day, I may also ger a Ruger 77 RSI in .308Win. Those two would be fun to test against each other.

I had one of the old tang safety Ruger 77RSI's in 308 WIN !
For what it was it shot fairly well . I think 3 shot groups at 100 yards with handloads were about 1 1/2" . The one I "had" didn't have the greatest trigger in the world since it wasn't consistent so I replaced it with a Rifle Basix sear and got the poundage down to a constant 1 3/4 pounds . WHile it didn't markedly improve group size it did help with trigger control .

I love the looks of them. On the Sako site, says it is available in 338 Federal. That would be the ticket for me, except it is awful light for my tastes. I like a heavier rifle, for a 243, 257, 7mm-08 etc, smaller calibers, would be okay for me, but when you start getting to .308, I am inclined for a heavier gun.
Cousin has a ruger in 270, I do not care for the 270, but the gun is nice handling gun. Kind of reminds me of handling a sxs shotgun, compared to an auto, feels more lively, all perception of course.
