The little brother to my Uberti .45 Colt 24" Octagon Barrel came in today.
It is a Taylor's & Co. Uberti Carbine in .357 that Pioneer Gun Works has completely worked over.
Fit and finish is very nice on this rifle. This is the first Carbine length I have had or even held and I like it a lot better than I was thinking I might.
Of course a thread about a new rifle is not complete without pics.
The only thing that has turned me away from the Uberti 73 Carbines for so long is the front sight being on the barrel band. I wish they would make them like the original and put them right behind the barrel band but I can live with it.

Well I just shortened a 92 for him and slicked it up pretty good. He can use that pretty good. If he can use this 73 I'd gladly let him. I want him to do good more than I want myself to do good.
I think this will still be a little heavy for him. I dont want to shorten the stock on this one unless he really needs me too or I find another stock.
I had an old Uberti 73 carbine in .22lr, the front sight was correct on the barrel and it also had the cleaning rod trap door in the butt. I guess Uberti tried cutting costs.
Whatever you do always give 100%........... unless you are donating blood.

The only thing wrong with that picture is none of it is in my backyard...
If these walls could talk, I'd listen to the floor.

Im thinking about taking some of the shine off the carbine. The wood on that rifle is much more like real Winchester wood. Not quite as red as others I have seen like my 45 pictured.
For you wood guys out there.....how could I easily make this rifle look more like a real Winchester? Just lightly sand the stock to take the shine off? It has a gloss look that I would prefer not be there.
Nice carbine. If you really don't like the front sight on the band have it cut off and one dovetailed into the barrel. Like the originals. Shouldn't run that much.

I may do that at some point but I had it replaced with a larger front bead.
Regarding short throw kits in the '73; my Uberti (Beretta) came with one from the factory and while the gun is simply stunning - lovely in both fit and finish - my opinion of the short throw kits is that unless you're going to spring for a full on race action job all they do is take the Winchester 1873's lovely, smooth, buttery soft action and make it run like a Winchester Model 94!
The several inches of throw saved just aren't worth it in my view, but that's just my 2¢ worth.
Both of those guns are full race guns. The longer .45 gun has the sweetest trigger I have ever felt on a lever gun. It was all done by Cowboys and Indians a few years ago. I traded for that one.
The carbine was just ordered from Pioneer Gun Works about 6 weeks ago. Here are the specs on the carbine.
Short Stroke Kit
The most popular modification available for the model 73 & 66 rifles are standard equipment on our competition ready rifles. You get your choice of our standard short stroke kit or the super short stroke kit. Both are SASS legal.
Aluminum Carrier
Made of 6061-T6 aluminum and hard anodized gold (similar to the color of brass) for longer life, these light weight carriers are less than 1/3 the weight of the stock brass carriers, resulting in the lightest feeling action possible.
Action Job
Every PGW competition ready rifle comes with an action job by Joe Alves, CAS gunsmith.
Speed-Sight Front Sight
This front sight was designed by us to be the best front sight for fast target acquisition and durability. It has a 1/8" spherical brass bead that draws your eye to it mounted to our own base. Carbines come with the same 1/8" spherical brass bead mounted on our own barrel band.
Stainless Steel Magazine Spring & Follower
These parts will help keep rust from forming in your magazine tube, which can lead to feeding problems. If you shoot where it's humid or rainy, you need these parts.
Leather Lever Wrap
The lever leather wrap cushions your knuckles and takes up space in the lever loop for more comfort and control. Plus, it adds a nice western look to your rifle.
New Firing Pin and Light Weight Spring
This aftermarket firing pin is stronger and slightly longer than the Uberti firing pin so it can be fit to your rifle. The light weight spring means less resistance for the hammer strike to overcome, which translates to more reliable firing.
Light Weight Firing Pin Extension
This addition lessens the weight that the hammer strike has to move in order to move the firing pin. This will make your rifle more reliable, and allow the use of a lighter main spring tension at the same time.
Slixprings
These aftermarket action springs include a lever spring and a lifter arm spring. They're made of piano wire, and are lighter and longer lasting than the stock Uberti action springs. New American made screws are included.
The gun feels great in but I have not fired the carbine yet.
As for Winchester making the Carbines with the barrel band sight and the dovetail......I dont know that. I would have to look around. I have never noticed a Winchester with the barrel band sight but may have just not noticed.
