OT - Ruger #1B in 22 Hornet
Well I finally got around to getting some handloads done for this one that would actually fit in the gun !
My mother bought this rifle for my father in February of 2009 about a month before she passed . It was the last gift she ever gave him !
After she passed I kinda set it aside and didn't feel like messing with it . Then about 6 months ago I loaded a couple rounds hastily and couldn't get them to chamber so I set it aside again !
So today I thought I would get this one straightened out !
And I have 15 rounds loaded with the Nosler 40 grain BT pushed with 12.5 grains of Accusate Arms 1680 and 15 rounds loaded with the Berger 40 grain also pushed with 12.5 grains of Accurate Arms 1680 .
After I got done with the handloads and checking each round to make sure it would chamber I then remounted the old Leupold M8 10x that came with the rifle and bore sighted it as well !
And after my mental lapse at the range sunday evening I checked the scope mounts again to make sure I had tightened them well ! Although with a Hornet I don't think it has enough recoil to pop anything loose LOL's !
Nope no pictures yet but as usual there should be after I go to the range tuesday or wednesday !

Re: OT - Ruger #1B in 22 Hornet
My Ruger #1B in 22 Hornet likes 12.1 grains of W296. It gives me easy minute of groundhog or 1" groups at 100 meters using Weaver V16 scope. I tried up to 12.5 grs but cut it back to 12.1, primers were showing pressure signs.
Just watch out for Winchester cases, I use RP cases for this load. The only split case was with WW base. I had 1 head sep but it was old brass. I only neck size and not the full neck, just the first 3/4 of the neck. I bought new RP brass and seated the bullets long to reduce the case stretch on the first firing.
Load data 40 V-Max or Ballistic Tips makes no difference
Federal Small Rifle Primers Match
12.1 grs W296
1.958" OAL w/ 40 V-Max
PACT Chrony 2 screens 2ft seperation 5 ft from muzzle
5 shot string this one is the avg of 5 strings
SD 0.3
CV 0.27%
AVG 3031.9 fps, avg over 5 strings was 3060 fps
ES 20.7 fps, the worst string was 51.9 fps spread
3017.7
3038.4
3037.2
3031.5
3034.9

Re: OT - Ruger #1B in 22 Hornet
I would be interested to know how your new rifle shoots.
Re: OT - Ruger #1B in 22 Hornet
H110 or H4227 were my favourites.
Thing is, pretty much any slower powder than them above and filling the case will give something from 22lr to 22mag vels.
Tiny amounts of bluedot can be used but be carefull!

Re: OT - Ruger #1B in 22 Hornet
This is the 4th 22 Hornet I've owned in my time !
With the first couple I could still get W680 and that did nicely in a little Winchester Model 43 and a Kimber 82 .
Later I acquired a very nice but redone Winchester Model 70 of 1938 vintage in 22 Hornet and that one truely loved the Nosler 40 grain BT with AA1680 !
Not really sure what use I would have for this one , but since we have it I might as well see what it'll do !
Incidently the guy who originally owned this rifle was a VA State Trooper and I happened to be with him the day he bought this rifle at a gun show in Harrisonburg VA !
After he died we got it from his widow with my mother footing the bill as a gift for my dad almost exactly one month before she passed !
So you could say I've known this rifle for a pretty long time

Just took some pics of the Hornet !

The wood on the stock of this rifle is very nice I'm not sure my pics do it justice !
And before anyone asks , no I wasn't the one that put the gold in some of the roll stamping !
The Leupold M8 10x is very clear and nice and had removed it earlier !
I had it on the Remington 722 244 I had a month or so ago and just the other day it found it's way back on the little Hornet !

Wonder if this one would be okay for Roe out to say 75 yards with a Barnes 50 grain TSX

Re: OT - Ruger #1B in 22 Hornet
I know of a guy that kills deer in his soybean fields with a Hornet. He lungs 'em so they'll walk out of the field before they expire. It works every time.

Re: OT - Ruger #1B in 22 Hornet
Okay I went to the range after dinner this evening and shot some with this one !

The best 5 shot group was an 1 1/2" with the Berger 40 grain ! I didn't think that was terrible bad for the first try . One things for sure I gotta teak the trigger on this . It's gotta be over 4 or 5 pounds !
The Noselr 40 only shot 2 1/2" but I'd be willing to bet it can do better with that bullet !
If I can get them down to an inch or maybe 7/8" I'll be satisfied . The best I ever got for a 5 shot group at 100 yards with the old Model 70 was 3/4" .

They aren't terrible but not the easiest either !Nath wrote:Are them triggers easy to do? Often wonder.

Ruger "claims" they're fully adjustable or atleast they used to .
But face it if you want a really nice sub 1 pound trigger you need something after market !
I'd like to run across a box full of the old Canjars at bargain basement pricing !

Re: OT - Ruger #1B in 22 Hornet
The older 3 screw trigger is FULLY adjustable. The 1980s replacement 2 screw trigger is NOT fully adjustable. Sometime you can find one of the 3 screws in the juck drawer at the gunsmith. If not, then the Canjar if someone was dumb enough to sell it other wise the Kepplinger set trigger. Moyers unit is not fully adjustable either!

I love the little 22 Hornet cartridge, I always thought it would make an awesome little levergun cartridge with appropriate RN bullets.
