... to within grabbing distance. Most would skitter into the water if you walked down that road. The really big ones would think about it though. Now if you're walking with your dog and he's way out front, that's a different matter.

To funny.
Never been around gators. I don't have any fears of them, but I'd sure give them some respect.

But ... I'm not funny. Nor do I intend to be in the future.bulldog1935 wrote:OK, well I'll rationalize your next joke, too.
I get into factual/nervous mode when I see those things lined up like that. I used to not really pay them much attention and I would often swim in the Wekiva river here with them floating around or sunning themselves on fallen logs at the river's edge. That was back when I was a teenager. Now I have kids and I live on a lake ... not too far from that river. There are several gator slides from the shallows up to the berm that my dock terminates into. Thus, they are no longer funny. Once my kids get older, I'm sure it won't bother me that they're around.

I heard that for years, then one day an old Cajun I met tole, "... if gator tastes like chicken, then it's either gone bad or the cook don't know how to fix it!" That applies to snake, turtle and a lot of other things also!RIHMFIRE wrote:tastes like chicken...............really they do!

Hmm... Gator tastes like gator. Just like snake tastes like snake. Who ever came up with this whole "tastes like chicken" thing? Oh, yea, those are mostly little guys, and while they may head for the water as you approach, they are gators, and therefore contrary and might just decide you look tasty. Hmm. I wonder if people "taste like chicken" to a gator.

Yep. gotta agree. Gator tastes like Gator. A mix of chicken and calamari. Usually sold in battered gator bites. I only had unbattered gator tail once and it was goooood!
As for the gators themselves, IF they haven't been fed by idiot snowbirds or tourists, and it's not mating season, they willusually get out of your way. Although the do like the low humm of a diesel powered lawnmower. Weedwackers scare them.

Now you can walk your dog and go 'gator fishing at the same time! Get a yappy toy poodle and put it on a retractable leash, let it run out about 30' in front of you; 'gator stew...

That might work... self defense right?
The taste of the meat depends on where they live and what they eat. If they don't have a lot of fish in their diet they will taste more like pork IMHO. Farm raised gator usually has less of a fishy taste.
