Organizational question

Post by J Miller »

OK, this is in regards to my other thread about the new Redding dual ring sizing die. When I do get one I want to do a test report on how it works in comparison to the other regular dies I have.

I have four other sizing dies I can compare it to:
RCBS steel
RCBS carbide
Lyman carbide
Lee carbide
and 5 guns chambered for the .45 Colt to shoot them from:
OM Ruger BH
Uberti Cattleman
S&W 25-5
Win 94AE Trapper
Marlin 1894 Cowboy.

Now, I would think I'd first need to establish the base line accuracy with all 5 guns using a good solid factory load. Something I didn't load on my own machine. Say the R-P 250gr lead standard load. I've always had good results from that. I think 100 rounds, 20 from each gun would be sufficient.
Problem is that brand and type of ammo suffers bullet set back in tube magazines. I suppose I could hand feed them.

Then I would need to load enough ammo with each die, to shoot from each gun. 100 rounds should be enough, 20 from each gun.

Since this is a test of the sizing dies only, the remaining press work should be done by the same dies and priming tool. Say if I'm going to use a similar load I would use the Lyman dies because they have a bullet seater specifically for the factory .45 Colt style bullet.

Primer, powder, bullets should be from the same lot. Cases might be problematic.

So, have I missed anything? Any suggestions?

Joe

Sounds like you've got it all together. Looking forward to the results. Probably will get the double ring die in 45 Colt and .357 mag. If it's made by Redding, I already know it's good.
