RL-7/45-70???

Post by hartman »

I finally broke my stubborn streak and am going to give RL-7 a try in my 45-70. I am hoping it is not as temperature sensitive as 4198 and 4895. Do any of you use this and if so what has been your experiance god or bad with it. I'm using a 345 grain homecast ww lead bullet.

That's one of my favorites in my 45-70. The only other powders I use are XMP5744 for mid range loads and Unique for very light loads. RL7 is hard to beat for heavy or mid range loads.

RL-7 is an excellent powder. You might also consider H4895 and H4198. Those two powders are part of the H. extreme line and are noted for their temp. insensitivity. 2015 is a great velocity powder. Regards. 1886.

Thanks fellas I appreciate the input. And 1886 I have been using Imr 4895 and 4198. I just recently got a chronograph so last summer I was chrono'ing my loads. I was out this winter working on a load for 45colt and took the 45-70 with. For no other reason than it was set up I shot a couple across the screens and had lost almost 200 fps. from my summer time readings. I got to thinking that maybe I should use magnum primers but didn't notice any significant difference.

Thanks again, Hartman

All I use is Reloader 7 or imr-3031. Reloader 7 gives better velocity for me.

By chance were the "summer" loads sitting in your vehicle or in the direct sunlight for a period of time and were the "winter" loads sitting in the cold for some time? Just curious. Thanks. 1886.

1886,
No, this is Wyoming so the summer is hot, hot and winter is cold cold. I probably had the ammo in my shooting bag in the back of the pick up and it only takes me about 10 minutes to get to where I shoot.

Re7 is one of, if not the best powder for the 45-70.

1886, I mean no offence in this statement as others believe as you do about 2015. I have fired in excess of 1000 pressure shots with the 45-70 and I can state categorically that in all the tests, 2015 (AA or XMR, or any of it's other iterations) was the worst powder of all the ones usually linked with the 45-70. It hit the pressure wall at least 100fps sooner than about any other powder you can think of (IMR4198, H4198, H322, RE7, RE10, H335, VV N-130, AA2230) or you name it. I prefer to stay out of these discussions but I would feel guilty to let someone try to duplicate velocities of one of the other good powders with 2015. It won't happen without a significant increase in pressure.

I appreciate your thoughts and experiences so certainly no offense of any sort was or will be taken. I and others have found 2015 to be a significant performer in the 45-70. Accurate techs have found found 2015 to be a capable performer as well. Some arms will like it others may not perform optimally with 2015. Leverluver please always feel free to speak your mind with me. I am by no means a guru or the last word on any subject. I appreciate your advice as well as the advice of others. This is how I learn. Best Wishes. 1886.

I did not mean to disparrage 2015 as a "useful" powder. No doubt that in many rifles, it may very well produce the best accuracy that rifle is capable of. I would certainly choose an accurate powder over one that could drive a bullet a few fps faster but was less accurate. If you hadn't used the term "velocity powder", I would have remained in my dungeon and kept my yap shut

RL-7

I use 40.0 grains of RL-7 under a 405 grain cast bullet for about 1600 fps. This is my favorite load. It shoots well in all my 45-70's. Tom.
