OT Check out this antler!

Post by Nath »

Image

Has to be a gold medal for roe :D 255mm average length!

It nearly all went wrong! After a half hour crawl and stalk my first shot with the buck quartering to me in long grass the bullet crossed his pelvis ruining alot of meat :( I honestly do not know what went wrong with that first shot, I usually know if I pull a shot but,,,,,,,

At that he turned and started making for home but the second shot raked through the boiler room and finished the deed.

Interestingly, the bullets used from a 308 were Hornady round nose for the 30wcf and at 60yds or so both exited, they held together and I only found one piece of lead!

Image

All in all a good weekend up Scotland, I saw 12 roe deer including youngsters and two does fighting for 1/2 an hour.

Nath,

Congrats on the score. Those antlers look kind of strange, but then again I don't know anything about roe deer.

Nath that is an awsome lookin buck you got, but as others said, I haven't a clue what a roe buck is. Is that a typical buck? Tell us more about them, I am interested.

Nice Roe !

I've been wanting one of those for about 30 years now and have never made it across the pond in that direction to get one !

Did however get a set of Roe antlers in an auction a couple years ago that were supposedly killed in 1957 in Suffolk I think is what it says on the back of the wood they're mounted on !

Curiouse about your rifle . Is it suppressed or is it a heavy barrel gun ?
Had a friend from Ireland bring in a chap from England two weeks ago that invited me over whenever I can make it for some Roe/Sika shooting and the pics he showed me all his rifles were suppressed .

All the rage over here, suppressers  mine is just a heavy 20" tube.

I love roe deer, easy to carry out! This one weighed around 90# gutted. The bucks and does are getting terrortorial now ready for the rutt which can start now and or through to August.
Does mostly rear two young usually both sex. Born about early May.

No tails just a small stump and after a moult turn a shade of red.

Oh, and they don't miss a trick and are hated by forresters!

No Rusty, these are the exception and would/will score highly.

Pretty much, cover is shooting up now, a bit slower in Scotland.

The burgers are nice :D

Congrats! Those are really some nice looking antlers!

While I'm unfamiliar with them, those roe deer sound about the same size as our Coues deer here in Arizona. The quarter bores and .243 are popular for hunting them and I'd always thought that I'd like to stalk 'em some time with a lever gun in .25-35. Just because! :)

Best,
Oly

Heck, a 357mag levergun would be fine on them too.
