I meant to suggest you start with some in the house exercises, before taking on the bike, traffic, munchkins, etc.

Joe,
I suggest to get a indoor bicycle trainer stand.
This way you can (for now)hook your current bike up to it and use it inside your place helping you build up and get used to your bike again for the proper gearing and such.
These trainers use magnets which apply resistance to your slightly elavated rear wheel and also supply support of balance.
below is an example of one for around $50
I use these in bad snow conditions and honestly they work very well.

madman4570,

That is not a bad idea. The local bike shops are selling those for $150.00+ I'll see what I can do about that.

Is that realistic or just perception on my part?

Talk to your bike shop and tell them you cant afford no $150
Ask them if this model below($65)shipped will work good ? (it should)

http://cgi.ebay.com/INDOOR-EXERCISE-BIK ... 4840727e1d

Then if you decide to go for it, count me in for putting in 1/3 the cost pal!

Its a small cost to have you get healthy, so you can be here a long time for us

well, I can still ride mine.
Been riding with my daughter. First time out with her this summer, all the gum came off the sidewalls of my tires. I couldn't believe it when I priced Conti Super Sports, which I've been riding on for 30 years - they're $45/tire now - never mind that. I bought some cheaper tires, and long as I was at work, replaced the brake cables, brake pads, and handlebar tape - threw in some blue nylon toe clips. Came out real pretty.
Image
Oh, the trunk on the rack - it's insulated, and will hold a 6-pack plus a couple of water bottles and blue ice to keep them cold.
This bike was built just a couple of years before they quit making USA-bound Raleighs in England (bought in '76, but I believe it's a '77 model) - I was in college in Nashville, then rode it all over Austin. It has a lot of miles and upgraded some components over the years.
It's also my size - you can't ride this bike unless you have a 36" inseam. Part of the reason it looks so nice is its inside on a turbo-trainer when its not on the road.

This is the real bike for all the off road bikers. Swiss mountain bike with electro motor help for every terrain. You have to ride this bike to see what a great machine it is. Mountains up and down without any problems and you can also use the bike without the electro modus. I bought one and the mountains are now a little less steep. Mountainbiking is fun now not work. http://www.flyer.ch/m/mandanten/145/top ... 33311.html. 30 miles into the woods and mountains are now a joy not a torture!

Balance is all in your core muscles. I've known some guys that looked like rolling coronaries, but were in aerobic shape and could pound you into the ground on a ride. Not saying their diet was great - they liked their ettouffe, but still stayed in shape.

bulldog1935,
Your bike looks almost identical to mine. Same type of gear shifters in the same place. Same center pull breaks. Same basic everything. Mine is however on a smaller frame. Before I gained all this weight I had a 30" inseam. And I cannot get on bikes as tall as yours.
I found out about bike frame sizes when I was shopping for new ones. In all my years I never heard about bike frame sizes until then.
I don't know if mine is considered an M or S but the distance between the bottom angled frame bar and the top horizontal bar on mine would be less than half what yours is. You can see this in the pics I posted back a ways.
As for tires I had a set of gum walls in the garage from 11 years ago. I put them on but they are hard and I am not really sure how long they will last. Oh well, it does not matter, I will run them until they fall apart then buy some new ones.
I've priced new 27 x 1¼ tires and they are running around $25.00 and up here in IL. I have been told that since no manufacturer has made bikes in that size for about 25 years they are not very common.

Also, I did not mean to suggest I was considering paying $150.00 for one of the stationary supports. That would be foolish considering my lack of finances. When I said: "I'll see what I can do about that.", I meant I will check out the source you mentioned.

Unfortunately it is realistic. I will not go into things here but the weight gain is there.
As for leaping into things, it is the only way I know how to do it. I either jump right into it or I ignore it. I've ignored this exercise thing too long and need to get going while the weather is reasonable. Soon it will be winter and shitty again and well maybe by then I'll have the bike set up for indoor use.

THAT is what I have found out. I used to have really good balance, but in the years since my fall down the stairs in this and a previous house my balance has deteriorated.

Just might have something to do with my falling off perfectly good bikes. :x

El Chivo,

Fell off last Saturday. Been back on once, but found out something's wrong in the gears. I thing the clutch thing in the rear hub is trashed. Gotta get that fixed before I climb back on.

Joe, I have a set of wheels built with skinny Rigida rims - back when I was racy, I used to ride on 27 x 1", 120 psi.
But as I, um, upgraded myself, I at least increased them to 27 x 1-1/8.
I had no problem finding tires online - either ebay or just google "27 x 1-1/4 tire" and you'll have a lot of choices pop up.

Sounds like you may need a freewheel, or it could be dirt. They thread on with a spanner - you can remove them and clean them, or a new one is not that expensive - you can get nice wide-range ones for as little as $20.
Here's a good bike shop
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/
and first, check this on lubricating freewheels:

The rear hub freewheel assembly had not be cleaned or lubed in the 40 years I've had that bike. So being kind of stupid I took the rear wheel to the bike shop and asked them to check it out, take it apart if needed and fix what it needed. They trued up the wheel and told me they never took them apart, just replaced them.

When I got home I oiled it good. Now it acts like it's jumping teeth or something.

I do not have the tools to take the free wheeler out of the hub. So it will have to go back to the bike shop. I'll take the whole bike this time and maybe they will be able to properly diagnose the problem.

IT WILL BE RIDEABLE! So sayeth the Miller.

Joe, it sounds like your rear derailleur needs adjusting or the chain is worn out and needs replaced. That could be the cause of the chain jumping/skipping.

Yes, that's possible. I've kept it adjusted for years but right now I'm not having too much luck. I'm gonna look at it again before it goes to the shop.
The chain is 12 or 13 years old, but hasn't had but a year or so worth of use. It was a Wal-Mart chain so not the best.
And I had to replace the rear derailleur cable housing so it's possible it's not quite right either.

I crashed last Saturday and my left leg is still swollen up and stiff. I think I came just about a gnats posterior from breaking my leg. I've been contemplating a visit to the local DR but getting an appointment requires the same luck as winning the Lotto.
I haven't had shoes on since last Wednesday and today finally got them on. So I'm going outside to tinker with the lawn mower and the demon bike.

We have some old JD bikes a ten speed and three speed but those narrow tires aren`t any good for gravel. Last year on our trip we bought MT bikes which work pretty good but my hands fall asleep on them and they`er a little small.
So last summer when we got home i bought the Trek and it serves the purpose nicely but expensive .
Here`s a pic in TX on the MT bike with the Snoop dog.

Awesome pup Pitchy. One of the best dogs I ever had was my Dachshund "Bagel" (she looked just like one when curled up). She loved car rides (hanging halfway out the window), boat rides, and swimming in the ocean with me. She got along perfectly with our cats loving to rough-house with my Siamese, they were inseparable. Wish she was still here.

Second awesome dog was my Boxer "Wally", he was walleyed. :D Poisoned by bass-turds who robbed my house while I was at work.

I did not know they made a inside hub 7 speed, I only remember the 3 speeds from my childhood

Snoopy is my buddy, love that little guy but a full time job watching him. We were in a camp ground in TX and a Armadillo ran across the lawn and into the woods. Snoop was right on his tail and we lost sight of them
Luckily we found him, or should i say we found his tail sticking out of the Armadillo hole, grabbed him by the tail and pulled him out. Glad there wasn`t a snake down that hole.
The 7 and 8 speed nexus internal hubs are awesome, you can be in 7th and stop, shift to 1`st from a stop and your in 1st. and smooth as butter.

Well, three weeks ago this Saturday I crashed on my bike. Tore up my left leg and bruised the stuff outta both knees and the lower calfs of both legs.

5 days later the left leg swole up, parts of it turned reddish and got hot. The swelling has subsided a bit but I finally got to the point I had to go to the DR about.

My poor old leg is infected from the gash just below the knee to the foot.

Now I got antibiotics coming in for that and some water pills to get rid of the fluid build up.

So, I do my best to get out and exercise and end up hurt. That is not fair.

Oh well, as soon as I can get my good shoes back on I'll be back at it.

bought my daughter the Motobecane Cafe Express 8 with the Shimano Nexus shifter.
Image
was laboring over a bike she could ride the hills around here with me.
I first looked for a 24" bike with the Nexus 7. Found only one, made in Germany by Kettler, but it was $700.
Next, I went by the best bike shop in town. They were pointing me toward a 26" dirt bike with a 15" frame. So I used that standover height, 565mm, as my reference point and kept looking.
Found the Motobecane on sale at bikesdirect for half price, and it has full-size road wheels (700c). This bike will grow with her and she can ride it forever. She's already checking out components and wants alloy pedals with toe clips...

Nice looking bike. I hope she gets a lot of use out of it like I did mine.

I haven't been back on mine since the Wednesday after the fall. It's still got to go to the shop and then I've yet to find the new parts I have for it hidden in the garage.

And, the physical problems I've had since the fall are not leaving. DR is looking in all the wrong places for the cause of the swelling. I'm beginning to think they'll find it only when they've done the autopsy.

She does love the bike and has been up and down our road 10 times / day. But right now has been laboring over a cat. We found an Abyssinian breeder in town with a litter due next month. She is going to ask everyone for cash for her birthday to pay for most of it. She spent this afternoon designing a cat tree and making a materials req.

Well, wish her a happy birthday from me.

As for the cat, I've never paid for one. Well at least not as a purchase. You always got vet bills and food and such to pay for.
All my life I've just found 'em, or had them adopt me.
My wife and I even found one on the side of the road on Yarnell Hill in AZ some years ago. A gorgeous long haired female kittie we named Velcro Paws because when you tried to pic her up she'd extend all 18 claws and stick to what ever she was on. It was a game for her. She'd purr like crazy while we laughed like children with her. Another one we miss.

Tell your daughter that a cat is a life long treasure. Never take them for granted and always love 'em up. When their time comes it will kill you inside. BTDT ...... way too many times.

I have a neighbor who feeds feral cats - in the past up to 30, but now he claims to keep it down to 2, but they always have feral kittens. They raid my dogfood, mark my garage, walk on my truck every night, potty in my plants. I believe they killed a litter of fox kits, and always raid bird nests. When I had my Akita, she must have killed a dozen cats that wandered into her fence. Not to offend, but I wouldn't have one that I didn't pay for. I want to know what I'm getting.
Aside from good looks, Abyssinians have long and petite dimensions, very neat personalities, playful, they like water - baths and showers - and tend to go limp when picked up. The cat will never go outside unless it's on a leash.

My daughter will be very responsible with the cat. Her birthday is not until the end of September, about a month before these cats will be weaned. I bought her the bike now, because their inventory was down to two in her frame size and color (she would never ride the Rose one - she has a total aversion to pink).
