Don't appear to be props... but what make/model gun is that? The lever seems to have the appearance of a Winchester 1885, but the action's too long, and there's that pesky magazine tube...

Ain't familiar with cavarly boots, but those appear to be pre-1900, as I'd think the rest of his outfit is also... can't tell by what's showing of his pistol what that is, but holster appears sturdy, homemade and what a man that thought of his guns as tools would have, not showy or flashy... unlike his indian beaded shirt/jacket.

Is it just me or does that shirt and hat look about 3 sizes to big?

The clothes look like LeBeauf's in True Grit 2010. The rifle looks like a Whitney Kennedy.

Good eye Joe. I had to zoom way in to see the Whitney style lever. Looks to be the large frame version.

To my eyes, the photo appears posed in front of a fake background.

Almost all old cabinet photos are posed in front of a painted background; few were actually taken outdoors. The question is whether the subject is authentic or dressed in the photographer's props. :)

Not sure about the clothing but here sure doesnt look like he knows how to handle a rifle. Seems kinda careless to be resting an arm on that rifle barrel without a hand on it to make sure it doesnt fall over. Thats just MHO.

The rifle is probably a large frame Whitney Kennedy with a 28" barrel. It could possibly be a Whitney Burgess, but the cartridges in his belt loops do not appear to be 45-70, which the Whitney Burgess would have shot. They look more like 45-60.

Looks like a righteous set up to me. I also think the rifle is a Whitney Kennedy. As for how he is staging the rifle, that's pretty common. I have even seen some period photos where the subject is leaning on the butt plate with the muzzle on the deck! Neat old photo. Where do you find these things? :D

Would a real rifleman use his rifle as an arm rest like that? I know I wouldn't.

After looking at the pic for a bit, I wonder if the guy was enjoying Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and decided to get a pic of himself while there.

Photos back then were a big deal and often times they used props. This guy however does not appear (in my opinion) to be propped dressed. Usually when props are used they tend to go overboard. This guy looks like a working guy who may have wanted to send a lady back home his likeness from whatever town he ended up in where there was a photographer. Maybe before he headed out so she would not forget him while gone.

Looks authentically dressed in my opinion. The Whitney Kennedy would most def not be a prob and his rig looks like it fits him well. Shirts were often too big back then.

Back then one size fits all was the standard in shirt length. Sleeve garters were used often or the long sleeves were just tolerated. Sometimes leather cuffs were the answer or just rolling them up.:D

I think he`s a farm boy trying to look tough for his girl friend or mom. Or maybe a eastener that roomed out west and wanted a cool pic to send back home.
All staged IMO. :)
