Ruger 1911 vs. Remington 1911

Post by flounderjig »

Any of you all had experience with either gun. Ive had Kimbers, Colts, Springfields in the past and ended up selling them all (happens when you work in a gunstore.) Just doing revolvers now, but with the way things are going in this country Im thinking a 1911 would again be a good defense choice. I carried a full size for 3 years concealed, no problems with that with the right holster. Any input would be appreciated before I make the choice.

I bought the standard Remington 1911R1 and am very satisfied with it.
The accuracy has been good and functioning flawless.
I picked the Remington because it looks just like the GI version except for the sights, which are a great improvement.
The gun is fitted as well as any I have seen, new or old.
The two magazines that came with the gun are top quality.

The trigger is a little gritty and I will stone it when I get a chance.

Hard to comment on the Ruger since it's not widely available yet (I've yet to lay eyes on one). That said, I like the series 70 nature of the Ruger and the general features of the Ruger better than the Remington.

I intend to buy the Ruger unless I start hearing negative reports.

Best,

I've had a Springfield that was made into a comped race gun , a Para single stack 1911 that was some special run they made and a Kimber Tactical .

"If" I get another 1911 it's gonna be the plain Jane, Metro Arms "American Classic" made in the Philippines and relatively inexpensive !

Then I'll get my gunsmith buddy to do a trigger job , add a ambi safety and larger mag release . And I'll shoot home cast HP's or home cast RN in it !
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !

I got the remington and am very pleased by it. like the previous poster said, trigger is a bit rough but the gun is reliable and accurate. I'd buy one again without hesitation

The new Ruger looks very good. They are taking deposits for them here. I haven't been to the "big" gun store lately so I don't know if they are arriving. I heard Ruger already pre sold a years production so it may be a minute before they are easily available. I haven't heard bad things about the Remingtons but the Ruger seems to have everything you need, nothing you don't, and a fair price.

I've handled the Ruger and at the moment it is my favorite full sized 1911 as it comes from the factory. The fit and finish was excellent and the features are very good for the $700 price range. The one at the store here was marked $759. The shopkeeper said Ruger promises a "commander" sized version in November.

Thank you Gentlemen for your indulgence in this, your information is greatly appreciated. Gives me alot to think about. I like Rugar, owning three of their revolvers, I like Remington, 2 shotguns and one rifle. Both companies make a valued product. You all have left me with alot to think about before I make the purchase. Thank you again.

I did a side by side comparison and they are different pistols. The Ruger is tricked out little with a great trigger and the Remington is plain jane but a quality product. The store I was at had the Ruger at $679 and Remington at $629. The Ruger was more bang for your buck , but I'm not a stainless guy. I'm still on the fence on which one to buy, I should have enough cash stashed by the end of the summer.
