OT: Lone Ranger Pistol Question - Caliber

Post by jfg_4 »

I have been debating my next purchase of a lever gun. I have been thinking of a .45lc or 32-20. That led me to think about wheel guns as well. Then I had a thought... What caliber did the Lone Ranger tote?

I am pretty sure it was a .45lc but I am not 100%. been a longtime since I have seen Clayton Moore and the silver bullet.

Cheers

What he actually carried and the caliber of the Silver Bullets may not have been the same.
He would have carried a Colt SAA in either 38-40, 44-40, or 45 Colt so they could use 5-in-1 blanks.
From what I remember the Silver Bullet cartridge looked to be a .45 Colt.

FWIW, the Lone Ranger/Clayton Moore's signature six-shooters were a pair of Nickel-plated, 4-3/4" Colt SAA's with factory Ivory grips.

LR used specially tooled firearm gear. Silver freezes differently than pb; Ag shrinks more than lead. Because LR never missed, one must assume he was not shooting a standard caliber or alternatively, had special molds made for casting bullets in standard caliber pistol.

I always heard he shot .44 American; so I assume, custom moulds.

Here's a story about a collector buying Brace Beemer's (the original Lone Ranger) Colt 45s. They appear to be SAA versions with 5.5" barrels and yes, they are nickel (or chrome) plated, engraved, with white grips.

Outstanding story on the pistol! Thanks.

I think I am going to be on the lookout for a 44-40 pistol/rifle.
