Wow! That's a real beauty of an old Coleman you have there. All most of them need is a simple tune-up and new mantle to run right.

and the shame is it's only a few hours drive away.

Check the underneath of the fuel tank, it should have the last two digits of the year of manufacture stamped in.

These are my two Colemans a 1962 vintage 200A I got at a garage sale about 20 years ago, and my 1936 vintage 242B inherited from my Dad the original owner. I also have a 2 mantle propane Coleman but somehow not in the same league as these two classics.

Most do but not all my dad's 242B being unmarked, and just going by memory of what dad told years ago as far as age.

The 242B takes same standard mantle as all Colemans. It just looks "saggy-baggy" in picture because it's new before being lit. Will shrink and tighten after first lighting. When I was a kid you could by "white gas" (pure gasoline with no additives) at the gas station from a pump for the same price as regular gas. All I can find now is the Coleman brand which is just white gas. Paint thinner is a different animal altogether, less viscous so would not atomize as well as the white gas/Coleman fuel. The closest thing to white gas at the hardware store is Naptha but I think it costs more so no point. Some of the newer Colemans are advertised as able to run on pump gas but not sure if these oldies will.

Standard Colemans require white gas but the newer versions (that have a gray hammertone) tank are rated for pump gas as well.

The only true multi-fuel lantern that I know of are military lanterns. I have one and you can research the NSN (if you want more info). It's: 6260-00-170-0430

stinkycat's pic reminds me of our last hunting/camping outing. I got there and my buddy was cooking and hadn't set up his lantern yet. So I lit mine. After cooking up some food he decided he to light both his lanterns as well even though they were not needed. It took him a while to get them going but he did it.

Then two friends of his showed up with the cars full of camping gear they had collected and brought all. Each guy had 3 or 4 lanterns and 2 or 3 cookstoves. Each item had a long story of provenance, a garage sale find or Craig's List steal, procedure for lighting it, keeping it going, new gaskets, butane, dual fuel, keronsene, the works.

Well we soon ran out of hooks and branches but still the lanterns and cookstoves kept coming out. I took mine down, but still the camping area was brighter than Chicago's Martin Luther King Dr. at 3:00 am. I was expecting a call from NASA that the space shuttle guys couldn't sleep. I still have a suntan from that night.

I think lanterns have the same appeal to guys that remotes and pickup trucks have, some mix of envy and control and male dominance, perhaps a totemistic symbol of challenging inner demons against a backdrop of competitive identification and disillusioned ambition. Or maybe they're just too cool.
