OT- New Home, New Job, New Life... ARGH !
I am finally moved out and off of my home of the past twelve years- MAUI, and relocated to my old hometown of Kailua on the island of Oahu (600 sq. miles) where Honolulu is located population just shy of 1 million vs Maui's 120,000 on 730 sq. miles. They have me working at a local elementary school being a warden during recess and lunch watching over 600 screaming kids. Get this, no football, no dodgeball, no kickball, no basketball allowed during recess too much risk of injury. Also not allowed to defend oneself even if hit first or you're just as guilty as attacker and can be arrested, all this from student handbook, boy have things changed since I was a kid. I independently also applied for a job at the local state prison and I think I prefer it to this job, interview in 2 weeks or so. I am going to build a reloading/flytying room on the side of the garage hopefully with AC to deal with this unbearable humidity and heat, much hotter than Maui, yuck. My home all full of boxes that need unpacking so range time not too soon in the future until clutter is under control. I go to SF Bay Area at end of month for a wedding (my USCG Lt. JG nephew's) and hopefully get a day in striper fishing in the bay or perch fishing in the surf. I miss Maui, I miss Lucille, I miss my outdoor cats Sambo & Gracie, but I miss most of all my Mom & Dad. Wish me luck on my prison interview it's the only thing I can think of to look forward too these days.

Ji, I hope the prison work environment is way better than it was in the juvenile detention facility where I taught for five years. Depressing, high pressure, ALWAYS watching your back, and always maintaining a cynical attitude toward the motive of the "residents".
(Boy, I sound encouraging, don't I).

I have always thought that I must surround myself with as much happiness as possible to stay healthy. I do not feel that I could work in the penal system in any position. If I surround myself with feces, some is bound to get on me. My fear is that I can't wipe it all off and it'll build up over time, making me ill.
Keep looking for that silver lining Ji. Remember Jim's 80/20 rule. Look for the good and don't focus on the 20% bad or it will eat you and your family.
Stay well man. We need ya.

I have a friend that's a prison guard, and I couldn't do his job if my life depended on it.
I'd probably be in there permanently, right quick, if any of the things happened to me, that happened to my friend.
It takes a special kind of person, to be able to do that kind of work - and my hat's off to both of you for it.
BTW - My state requires a pyschological exam be passed B4 hire as a guard.

ji I'm working in the Dallas-Ft Worth area, I'm hip deep in Texans after being used to driving 40-60 miles to town from a job. Changes take some getting used to.
On the up side, I've bought 14-15 new guns in the last 6 months (just to maintain my sanity ya know)

I'd take Prison Guard in Max any day. At least most Prison Systems understand the concept of Self Defense.

Look on the bright side Ji, your in Hawaii! In 2 months, you'll be at the beach while I begin chipping the ice and snow off of my windshield with my frozen fingers, dreaming about the smell of actual living vegetation, while the stomach flu shoots through the family for the 2nd time in a month, and well you get the point. OK, so it probably didn't help but thought I'd try

My apologies for the misconception concerning my prison job, it is not for a guard position but for a Maintenance Supervisor II position which is actually an upgrade in pay and position from my Maui position though still lower than my previous Honolulu position of Construction Superintendent for the island. I will be running the facilities maintenance program for prisons on this island. Not sure how much exposure I'll have to inmates, hopefully very little. I was asked today if I wanted to tutor immigrant kids in English after school one on one, and this sounded great allot more appealing than cafeteria warden though I get the feeling I'll be doing both.
This old house still has the canal in the back of property which runs to the ocean and Kailua Beach one of the best beaches in the world, so I can just slide my little boat into the water and head towards the beach for some offshore fishing, and lobster diving like I used to before moving away. I will try my hand at bird hunting again on Oahu's North Shore when season opens in November, and as soon as my reloading room is complete I can start reloading again in comfort so all is not as bleak as it first sounded when I do as my brothers here suggest and look on the bright side. Still miss Mom & Pop but I know I'll see them again in a better place so something to look forward to. I'm sure Lucille is happier than ever running around on 160 acres with her own kind. Thank you for all your encouraging remarks.

Ji I had a Facilities/Maintenance manager at a school for over 20 years. It is not all gravy, but it was a good job. I do not know how it would work in a prison. Is all the work contracted, or do skilled inmates do the work. My janitors did a lot of the work, but some of it had to be contracted.
Some of the recent studies point a direct positive relation with students physical activities and grades. Sports during school time is good for the kids. Gets the blood flowing, burns sugar, and makes them a lot more alert and settles them down in class. We had injuries and they seem to happen in 2s and 3s. If kids do not do activities that involve risks what are they going to do later in life if something happens to them. They need to learn how to act to prevent accidents, take bumps and spills. Yes it is a learned skill.
Good luck!
