Hey guys,
Stopped by a little outdoor store today and they happen to have a few used guns over to the side and I had to go look. They had a Marlin lever that appeared to be very old. It had a four digit serial number that I didn't write down . It had a steel butt plate, said "Marlin Safety" on top of the receiver, also had "Special Smokeless Steel" on the barrel. Was also stamped 30-30 on barrel, back near the receiver on the left. Had some character marks on the wood with an awesome petina to it. It has a straight grip and a slim forearm as compared to the new ones that look 'pregnant'. Could not find a model on it, there wasn't very much light in the store. When I operated the lever, the whole side (about 3/4" wide) comes back like the model 1894 does. Straight grip stock with a forearm that is very similar to a Winchester 94. Very neat looking gun. Not really a Marlin guy, but after seeing this one my feelings could change in a hurry. The guy wants $500.00 for it. Maybe less if a person waived cash in his face a little.
What do you guys think this is? I know that you can't know for sure but might could tell me where to look so that I could go back by there and figure it out and get the serial number.
Thanks Griff. I believe that is correct. I looked on gunbroker and it is identical to the one that is labeled 1893 carbine 20" round barrel. This one does not have the saddle ring though.
I had in my possesion 5 model 1893's for awhile with my oldest having been made in 1894 . That one had no "Marlin Safety" roll stamp on top and the seriel number was 5 digit I think .
All of the 5 I had were made between 1894 and 1906 .
Marlin changed the model designation from Model 1893 to Model 93 in 1922 I believe .

Another slight model difference was the seriel number placement . The majority of the Model 1893's had the seriel number stamped on the underside of the reciever right behind the forend wood .
On the Marlin Model 93 the vast majority of them had their seriel number stamped on the bottom tang beneath the lever .

Thanks for the information 6pt. Is this a gun worth looking at again or just let it go and find something else. Not really looking for anything specific, just always looking. Right now all I have is Winchesters but it can change in an instant.
I will go back by the store tommorrow and look to see what it says on the top tang and the serial number. I am almost positive that it is not a takedown model. Will let y'all know about this time tommorrow.
And maybe get a feel if he will come down with 'cash'
I went back by the outdoor store and took another look at the gun and it said 'Model 93' on the top tang. Under the lever its serial number was 645x. Couldn't make out the last number but it was either 6,8 or 0. Doesn't really matter. Wish I could get some pictures of it without the store owner noticing. If I seem to interested he may not budge off the price. Definetly not a takedown. Just a straight forward carbine. No saddle ring.

Post WW1 Model 93. The 4 digit serial numbers started showing up about then.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

If the bore is good and the finish is 70% the $500 is a decent price . If the finish is much better then that it's an excellent price .
