Got this one off of Gunbroker, and what a sweetheart it is.
#3 Shiloh 45-70, 30 inch heavy barrel, and manolive does it ever shoot good. Shot it yesterday with patched and naked bullets using KIK 2 and 1.5 in the patched loads, and 2f with the naked bullets. It landed one round right after another on top of each other at 200 yds.
Thanks, almost feel guilty about what I paid for it, and the condition it was in. The guy said he probably never fired more than 40 rounds thru it...
But it sure makes me smile when it went to ringing the gongs here at the house.
Fred this thing just lays down in the sticks and goes sound asleep. There's no wobble or wiggle it just lays there, and where you put the sights it stays and patiently waits for the trigger to get yanked.
It holds really well offhand also, that weight out front just lets it hang there.
The darn thing just feels like it was custom taylored to me..
Thanks,jn, but this one probably won't see the prairiedogs, but I'm sure hoping it gets a strong reputation on the long range and buffalo gong matches..
Good deal, Don! Are you going to have time to work up the dope and use it at the Quigley this year? I doubt I'll make it, what with gas costing $1000 or more.
I picked up a rifle very similar to that last fall from a fellow gun club member. Haven't shot it much with the limited ranges I have around here. If I can't get it to shoot a longer bullet I'll have to try paper patched bullets.
What kind of sights are you going to put on it? Or are you going to leave those Shiloh sights there?

What about busting a Prarie Goat or two
And congrats of course !

Vance yup it's going to Baker and Forsyth. Yesterday it shown a tendancy to like most everything fed to it. I have my Heilman soul on the tang and shot it with the blade front, May just leave it that way. Do have a 111 and spare lever spring and firing pin on the way. Will take the 111 along on the shooting spree, but if things stay like they were yesterday it might not get mounted..
Don't know if I'll hunt this rifle or not, my 44-77 should be done in time for hunting.
Congratulations on your Sharps. That one is an exact twin to my first one which I bought when Wolfgang went across the street and started selling direct to dealers. I can't remember what year it was exactly when I bought it, but I do remember that it cost a grand total of $556 to my front door! I picked that particular configuration because I considered it to be a perfect example of what one of the first of the hide hunters would have had available to them after the Civil War on the plains of Texas, Kansas and on up to Nebraska. If you need a little mercy from that military butt plate when shooting prone over sticks, Cabela's has a lace on leather recoil pad that fits perfectly and looks pretty "period" besides....order the "small" size.
Try that RCBS silhouette bullet in it. It shoots really well and doesn't beat you up as badly as the Lyman government bullet, although that is probably your best bet for long range use. Have fun...you're a lucky man!
I shoot mostly paper patch the last couple of years. The .444 mould from Old West wrapped with 9lb onionskin from paper mill. Have it set to 510 grs for most work, but have also cast some in the original length at 420 grs. that work very well for offhand loads.
The RCBS 82084 bullet has served well for grease grooves, I got it from RCBS before the dealers had it on their shelves.
Have been working with the Saeco 645 bullet in the wife's highwall with some fantastic results. The lyman postell is never a bad choice in the 45's.
Since Goex/Hogdons leftus holding the bag for powder have been doing quite a bit with KIK and honestly think it to be the finest sporting powder available today. Half the price of Swiss, and non of the hard foul troubles that Swiss gives in low humidity. It's running neck and neck for velocity with express and burns super clean, about like a duplex load.
I know you bought that Shiloh to shoot steel with BP and to shoot the long range matches .
But .................................................... !
If it were in my possesion I'd be trying the BRP 462-465GC and the BallistiCast 462-550GC pushing both with a decent charge of H322 . And just so happens I have both those molds in my accumulation of stuff for my 1895 Marlin !
I think that rifle with the BRP 465 grainer would make a nice Prarie Goat bullet and if I got the inclanation to shoot an elk the BallistiCast 550 grainer might do a good job inside 200 yards although I expect the BRP bullet would knock the fire out of most unspooked elk as well !

I have no plans to disgrace the barrel of this rifle with smokeless powder..(or any of the smokeless powder with fake smoke stuff added)
Here's the bullet I've been using for hunting. It's base is .435, wrapped up in 20 lb cotton paper it works good in the 45's and wrapped in the 9lb onionskin it works well for target and hunting in the 44's.

What does that one weigh ?

I keep thinking of sending my shiloh back and have the chamber recut for PP bullets. Wish I had time to work on my loads... it's all I can do to keep up with my loading for CAS and now WBAS...
Congrats Don, that's a beautiful rifle.

There is a fine line between hobby & obsession! AND... I'm over it!!
No I ain't ready, but let's do it anyway!
6pt that bullet as it sits there is 550 grs, the mould is adjustable from about 460 grs to 600.
That old roller needs to be kept in the original chambering if possible.
Griff you don't need to have anything done to that chamber, just wrap to bore and seat the bullet in the case no more than about 2 tenths.

Joe you just wind em tight, and fold the bases over to look something like a shotgun shell crimp. It's easier to keep the paper locked on the bullet till you load it with hollow/cup based bullets than flat based.
Don, I just noticed that you can get them in .405 as well as 38-55.... On the other hand, 45-70 would make more since I'm already invested in it's reloading.
