OT Gamekeeper, brass cases and magpies!

Post by Nath »

I had the joy of loading some 12g brass shotshell cases made by Magtec this week and tried them out this evening.
Our very own Gamekeeper sent me these as a gift :D Thanks J :D

Good fun to load and good fun to shoot! Messy to clean but what the heck!

I loaded 1 1/8th oz of shot with the measure set to 1oz for the powder and to be truthfull they are a little weak maybe due to lack of crimp. My next loads will be equal amounts and see what happens.

I got some squirrels though!

On the way back I found this exquisite little nest on the ground, must of been raided by a magpie or jay! It had cow hair, horse hair, grasses and even bale string and all maner of feathers, it also had moss in it. Just putting my thumb in there it would heat rite up.

Thanks GK for the cases, the house smells of rotten eggs now :D perfect :D

I knew when I saw them you'd put them to good use! :D

My local toy shop got them and some .410 brass shells from a gun club that was packing up.
He said he can order me some in 16GA if I want, after seeing your post I may take him up on it.

Nath, I've heard you can use the wax off "Makers Mark" bourbon bottles to seal the top wad, seems like a good excuse to buy a bottle of Makers Mark!

Nath,
You need to use 11 or even 10gauge wads with those cases to get a good seal. I have a little video on YouTube that shows how I load them for CAS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lOw6pcf1ag
A couple of weeks back I converted some Magtechs to use shotgun primers for a guy in Bristol who was developing smokeless loads for them. He tells me he has had good results and is making a how-to video of his own.

Perry,
Very useful video, I remember you posting it before.
I'll have to order some brass shells for my 16GA now. :D

Perry, I saved your video back when you first posted about it, and purchased some brass 12 ad 20 gauge cases from Magtech to give them a whirl. Haven't had a chance to yet. Looking forward to the video from your friend too!

Perry, that is a top quality video.

What I did Perry to get around the lack of 11g components was to make a punch and stamped out cards just under 10g diameter and use a few of them on top of the powder. They work for the OS card too. The patterns seem reasonable so I think my cards are working.
I will try upping the charge a little and add a little more compression during loading.
