Ruger fit and finish

Post by AJMD429 »

Here's what I need to file down and polish on a new Ruger Bisley .45 Colt/.45 ACP... :(

Image

It's not the grips, either; they are fine on another Bisley, and the other Bisley grips don't cover the 'ledge' on this grip frame...

Image

If it were before 1968, I'd just send it back and have them do it.

I WILL email them pics and feedback, though, because I like the company and want them to not lose business by sending out too many like mine...

I'd send it back, the grips don't fit.

That could leave a mark!
Could it be the grips were not fitted properly?

Never mind the year, send it back. That could cause bodily injury. And from what I hear, Ruger is punch drunk from being sued already.

Make them fix it, it's their boo boo.

How new is the gun? If you ask real nice they might send you a shipping label and cover the cost themselves.

If their quality control feedback handling is decent, they will pay as much attention to my email feedback as they would getting the item returned, and it will cost them less money and me not have to ship my gun back (...dunno why but I really HATE shipping guns back for stuff like this...). If their quality control feedback handling isn't decent, I don't feel sorry for them in that case.

Anyway, I send them the serial number and this message:
Sides of frame stick out in a 'ledge' above the grips. See these pictures: [Link1] [Link2]
Fit, finish, & function otherwise is perfect, and I will easily fix it myself, but I THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW, SO YOU DON'T SHIP TOO MANY MORE OUT LIKE THIS...! Some folks mightn't be able to fix it themselves, and wouldn't be very happy.

Send it back , if they "F" it up it's on them !

If they don't do it or not a very good job sell it and try ANOTHER manufacturer !

And yes I like Ruger as we have a number of their products !

Send it back or keep it for life. If I was offered such a gun and detected the least lack of symmetry in the repair I would never buy it. In my mind I'd be wondering what else is wrong.
Sincerely,

Hobie

You're way way nicer then I am !

If I had just paid $450-600 for that thing I'd be busting their balls !
But if I had seen it in a gunshop like that I wouldn't have bought it either !

Simple fix, a file, 3M pad and 5 min. I wouldn't ship it.

That's my sentiment, since it is a stainless gun - if it were blued steel, it would go back in a heartbeat.

Like Hobie said, once a gun is 'fixed' it can become difficult to sell, but a minor fix like this on a stainless gun is actually one I think I can fix just as well as the factory would. I did give it a good look-over for any other 'issues' though, particularly in the grind-and-buff phase, but none found.

My grips fit that poorly on my version of that exact same gun. I complained to Ruger and they sent me a set of replacement grips, and they fit poorly too.

I got a set of Hogue checkered wood grips and they fit the frame perfectly. I would try some other type of grips before you defile the metal on the gun.

This is nothing new with Ruger. Send it back. They are well used to getting guns back.

Scott, you're a little above the average man in that it would be no problem for you.

It being a new piece, I'd send it back.

Already done.

Hogue wood grips, VintageGrips synthetic ones, and another pair of factory Ruger grips ALL left the exposed 'ledge', and the grips that came with the gun did not leave any exposed 'ledge' when put on a Bisley Vaquero.

This weekend it's going to be file-and-buff.

Ruger already sent an email, offering the 'return/repair' option, but thanking me and assuring me that the Quality Control folks would be addressing the issue either way.

The .45 Colt/.45 ACP Stainless Ruger 5-1/2" Bisley is quickly becoming one of my favorite guns... 8) 8)

I'd send just the grip frame and grips in order avoid shipping a 'gun' with all the attendant hassle.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Either way, I certainly would have sent something back. I have one of the Blackhawks in blue steel with the .45 Colt/.45 ACP and really like it. I don't have to change the sights from .45 ACP 230 grain to the .45 Colt with 300 grain Jacketed Soft Nose Speer bullets pushed by 20.5 grains of H110/WW296. Whether this is reasonable or not, it works on my gun. I can easily see why your Bisley is fast becoming one of your favorite guns.

Well, my project of "gradually converting my Rugers to Bisley grip frames" isn't going well, because the grip frames are harder to come by than the guns themselves!

Of course, one option is to buy-a-Bisley-gun, sell-a-regular-gun, and repeat that cycle until I'm done, but I tend to get mine pretty scratched-and-dinged from totin' & shootin', and I'm sure I'd take a loss, plus even though I like to buy guns, I just don't want to go through all that (maybe. . . because it would include also selling guns... :| ).

Anyway, there's really only one I'm super-eager to turn into a Bisley - my 5'1/2" .44 Mag Stainless Blackhawk. I have a perpetually-backordered Bisley frame coming sometime before 2025, but I've been 'experimenting' with trying to swap frames, and now I realize why Rugers aren't all that cheap - there must be alot of hand-fitting the grip frames to the cylinder frames; neither of the two Bisley grip frames I have on other guns will come close to matching up to that .44 Mag's cylinder frame, and pretty much none of the Rugers of any type line up well at the top/rear joining between frames, except with the frame they came with.

When I get my Bisley grip frame (may be many months, at this rate  ), I'll be sure and post pictures of the 'fitting' process, because it sounds like it's going to be a much more involved process than I'd originally thought. I guess in the end that will make the gun all the more special once I've "converted" it. I may or may not go with the Bisley trigger, though, and I prefer the Super Blackhawk hammer to any of the others, so it could wind up a 'mutt' of a gun.
