OT-For The "Old" Jeep Guys--(Jeeps that is)

Howdy Guys,
The shop wanted $2200 to do the job on my old daily driver, a 1989 Jeep Wrangler. I did it for $200 and lots of aggravation. The clutch slave cylinder was leaking and is mounted inside the transmission bell housing and its a bugger getting it out when your by yourself working on the floor. The transfer case was worn out. Thats another $1,000 for a rebuilt one, but for that, thats all you need to do is install a new drive chain and new seals. Some guys also put new bearings in but in my case, it was not needed

I gave her a test run about an hour ago and NO LEAKS and best of all, I had no extra bolts.

So, with the $2,000 in savings I think I'll go Winchester & Colt hunting.

Here's the transfer case with the new chain installed--semi-easy job. It was a little tricky sliding the other half of the housing on for guys like me. Its a no brainer for a mechanic.

Cool Jeep. My neighbor is addicted to the things. One
summer evening I helped him and his dad shoehorn
a Pontiac V-8 into one! And yes, they make kits for
that, too!!

Great job Sixgun....Adapt, Improvise, and Overcome. You can always take that 2K and buy some more Starline Brass. I don't think that 2K ya saved will buy the kind of Winchesters you like and own.
However, another Model 71 would work. You can get a pretty nice one for 2K these days with the economy the way it is...

A 1989 Wrangler is NOT an "old" Jeep.

MB, M38, M38A1, CJ2A, CJ3B, FC150, FC170, CJ5, CJ6, Station Wagon, etc. -- THOSE are old Jeeps.

Thanks Stretch. NOW I find out. This is the third sc I put in and have decided to put Old Yeller behind the barn the next time it goes. AT 56, I'm getting tired of turning wrenches and laying on cold floors.

Hawkeye--The transfer case "transfers" power to the front axle when 4 wheel drive is needed. A shift in the cab to 4-H or 4-L puts power to the chain, which in turn drives the front axle. Its actually a bit more complicated than that but in a nutshell, thats close to how it works.

And Jarhead--If I had the 2'gs that I "saved" I never would have done the stinkin' job in the first place. Yer 'mokin what we's mean bro? -----------------Sixgun -----

Must be a younger man than me. I still like to work on my Jeep, but when it comes to pulling trannys and such, If they boys aren't around, it goes to the shop. Once the parts of the running gear are pulled, I'll work on them all day long and enjoy it. But man handling big ole hungs of steel out from under it are for the young.

I got my '89 Wrangler last summer, and since it wasn't running quite right and had a broken muffler paid only $900.00 for it. It came with CJ doors and probably a CJ hard top, along with a bikini top. I then paid my bro in law the other $100.00 to take it home and get it running right, which he did. One of the brackets on top of the radiator was broken off, so I paid a shop $250.00 to fix that. My jeep has the 2.5L engine which might be a little underpowered, but we'll find out this summer when we take a trip or two out to the Caribou gold mine which has one of the old gold dredges abandoned there. My other jeep is a Willys CJ-2A which I bought in 1996. They're fun.

Hawkeye that is just a plug that was installed at the factory to keep debris out of the transmission until it was installed in the vehicle. When a assembly line worker installed the dipstick tube at another staion this plug was just knocked down into the pan and left there, however many people over the years have had LOTS of questions about where it goes or what it does. Just a plug that can be thrown away when you service the tranny, it's is one pretty sure way to tell if a tranny has ever had the pan pulled before. Tom
