The question that I have is this. I want a 45-70 in a lever action real bad. I don't have a particular need for one I just want one. I was wondering what y'all had and if they performed like they are supposed to. I want it to have a 16-20 inch barrel, stainless or blue. I have a few levers in different calibers, but no big bores. The price range that I am willing to spend is $500.00 to $700.00, but less would make my wife happier. It will not be a safe queen.
My opinion (remember, it's worth what you paid for it ):
At 16-20" I'd look at the Marlin 1895G. I don't think they're ported but if possible I prefer non-ported. If you want the octagonal barrel, look for a CB BUT I don't know if they're available under 24" or in that price range.

Back on topic, one of those stainless, non-ported Marlins would be just the ticket I'd think.
Or a Sharps replica - but ya ain't gonna get one of them for $500!
A Guide Gun is just the ticket. I've seen blued shooter grade for under Five on occasion. I have a ported ( ) Stainless set up with scout scope and ghost ring. Thor's Hammer, it is.

I have a Marlin LTD III that is one of my all time favorits. Looks like a Cowboy that was shortened to 18".
If it weren't for that I'd have one of the guide guns.
I've also seen used Japanese '86s go for $800 or so if you sneak outside of your pricing like I do all the time.

For your price range a used Guide Gun is THE answer. You MIGHT find one of the old early post-1972 versions for that price range. If you do find one in good condition for that price, snap it up.

What do you have - tried all the lengths of Marlins and like the 22" the best but that is out of your parameters. What is the basis for your firm decision on length. If price is a consideration might find a nicer one of another length. Don't see many guide guns come on the shelf here. But nor have the ones I have seen been used much.

I do not have a guide gun, but I have a 1895ss and I have handled many guide guns, IN MY OPINION there really isn't that much of a difference in handling(but I am a big guy so you may feel differently) and I haven't seen anyplace while hunting, that an extra 4 inches of barrel length would have made a difference in whether I was gonna go into that thicket or not, and I see the 1895SS for sale in your price range failrly regularly. just a thought. I feel the same about my Cowboy 1895.....26" and a little heavier, but it balances much better and points great. Thin wood and no checkering are icing on the cake. AND it's not as loud as the Guide Guns, especially the ported ones.

Just thread the ports, install set screws with loc-tite, cut down and file flush (inside the barrel as well), cold blue and viola! No more ports.
A barrel stretcher is gonna be 'spensive though...

A buddy did that to his 1895M...he said it's better. I may transfer all the goodies from the GG to the Cowboy someday. I just cant imagine a better 200 or less yard rifle.

I'm holding out for a Henry 45/70 coming out in the spring of 2012. Just can stand any safety beyond a halfcock which the Henry has preserved. Doesn't hurt that it comes with the XS ghost ring sight. Only problem is they plan on a pistol grip stock which kind of turns me off. May I'll save my pennies for a used Browning 1886.

I just like the looks of the 20" and shorter barrels. A buddy of mine has the cowboy with the 26" barrel and it is 'long'. I wouldn't mind having one in a 'mares leg' also.
I sure don't know much but I have the standard old Marlin with the 22" barrel.it aint fish nor fowel but what ever you ask of it within reason it will do.it is everymans 45-70. if the extra 2" really bothers Ya alot an there aint no smith around cut off 2" and remount the front sight.then go shoot a buffalo. .

That would be my suggestion !
Although the 1972 to 1978 rifles refferred to here have 22" barrels !
Just so happens my ONLY 45-70 is a circa 1972 Marlin and mine is early enough that it doesn't have a Micro Groove barrel
