I had a chance to shoot the UMC .22 LR Black Powder cartridges at 50 yards today. The Temp was 50F and it was a bit breezy (10-20 mph winds). Being a bit anxious to try the cartridges at 50 yards, I decided to venture forth and try shooting each shot when there was a lull in the wind.

The rifle was my 39A made in 1948 with a circa 1960's Weaver 8X scope on board. With good .22 smokeless ammunition the rifle will shoot < 1" groups @ 50 yards... if I do my part.

Here are the two targets made with the 100+ year old component(s) that were loaded into Armscor primed cases since the priming in the original UMC cases was dead. I also tried 4.5 grs SWISS 4F with the UMC bullets which produced the group on the right.

The 100+ year old powder and bullets lubed with SPG performed well.



Now I am patiently waiting for the David Mos mold to arrive......

32 W S its a lead bullet got it with the gun, along with some other old rounds, never seen 1 befor, when & how long were they made

Regarding the .32 W.S. using the same type of "Protected Primer" as in my pic of the .30 W.C.F. case head, I have never seen one with a lead bullet that was factory loaded or referenced in any of the old catalogs. There is a good possibility that it might be a reload or it was factory loaded but never cataloged.

Is it possible that the bullet is actually a nickel plated full metal jacket like this one?

Cleaning was a "breeze". Not much different than cleaning smokeless. I used a few patches saturated with b.p. solvent, and then a couple of patches and the barrel was clean.

No cleaning between rounds. Just loaded 10 in the magazine of the repeating rifle and fired away!

You have my attention now. Are these cases available from a supplier or did you use already loaded .22LR and pull the bullets?

The primed .22 LR primed brass was made by Armscor. The Hunting Shack was carrying them but they are now out of stock and I don't see them on their website any more. Prior to obtaining these cases, I pulled bullets from REM ammunition to get the cases.

Many thanks for the head's up on the cases. I'd be interested in a tutorial (lots of pics would be handy since I can be dense at times ) on how to pull and reload them.

the W.R.A case has the flat nose, have REM-UMC 32 spl that has a flat nose HP looks like a factory crimp , W.R.A is lead, REM is copper

Thank you for the update. I do know that the National Projectile Works loaded there wirewound bullets into different cases so there would also be a W.R.A. CO. .32 W.S. loading with their lead bullet. Perhaps that is what your round is(?) If not it is most likely a reload.

Best way to remove the bullets from a .22 LR case is to grab the bullet with a pair of pliers and rotate it to the right while holding it in the left hand (if right handed). If one has a vise clamp the bullet horizontally on the side, and pull the case toward you. After dumping the powder the case mouth will need to be expanded to remove the crimp per pic below which desribes the loading process somewhat. A cast bullet will be needed since the crimp on smokeless ammo will ruin the heel during the debullet process.
