Years back I mounted one of the little Redfield IER scopes with base that were meant for the M/94. This was for a fella who just couldn't see the sights anymore. He liked it and hunted a couple more years because of the scope. I think for field of view there are better choices in scopes now. I've used the Weaver base for T/C Contenders on a number of Scout setups and like it just fine. The base is reversable and, installed in the right spot, gives you a lot of mounting options. Done properly you can use an IER or LER pistol scope. Other folks like commercial bases meant for scout setups. Can't comment on them as I have not used them. Go with the best glass you can afford. There might be some good and cheap glass out there but I never seem to find it. I sure like the Leupold 2X IER. I like to find them used and think they are a real good value. Good luck with your project!
What worked for me...
I had tried scoping a Thompson Contender...In that effort I acquired a 2x B & L pistol scope. HATED the scoped Contender. When I got my 45/70 Guide Gun, I bought the A/O "Scout Mount" for it, and put that B & L pistol scope on it. LOVE IT..!!
